Enjoying the game so far bu just to make sure I understand this, when initiating the battle you count the shortest number of spaces target is away? Even if it some of those spaces are invalid to move on? Or do you count the shortest valid path to said target? And lets say 1 player is on level 3 and another on level 1, do i count up 2 to get to level 3 plus the number of spaces away he is? Thanks in advance.

The rules state "The range is the number of movement points that it would take for a character to move to land in the space occupied by the opposing character. This includes moving up or down stairways and around corners following the character movement rules."

Therefore when determining the range you follow the movement path between the characters rather than the shortest distance, and do not follow spaces that are invalid to move on.

The rules state "Characters can battle from different levels but the range distance must follow the movement rules."

Therefore when determining the range you count only the spaces to move between the characters. There is no additional range distance for changing levels.
