The following online match was played on Boîte à Jeux. The game was played with drafted cards from E, I and K decks. I played with blue and got the button via random selection. Going clockwise my opponents we durn1818 (red) and MasterSly (purple).

1st set of cards (my first picks bolded):
Minors: Baker’s Oven, Clay Roof, Market Stall, Riding Plow, Grain Cart, Clapper, Sleeping Corner
Occupations: Mendicant, Wooden Hut Builder, Seasonal Worker, Fieldsman, Gardener, Smallholder, Clay Worker

Decided to take Clay Worker over Seasonal Worker because of some Clay Roof synergies.

2nd set of cards (my first picks bolded):
Minors: Wood-fired Oven, Carp Pond, Rake, Bakehouse, Duck Pond, Sawmill
Occupations: Berry Picker, Plow Maker, Carpenter, Village Elder, Adoptive Parents, Animal Tamer

Thought a bit between Carp Pond and Duck Pond. Decided to take Berry Picker and trying to deny wood from the others.

3rd set of cards (my first picks bolded):
Minors: Half-timbered House, Outhouse, Wooden Crane, Chicken Coop, Clay Hut Extension
Occupations: Land Agent, Hedge Keeper, Businessman, Frame Builder, House Steward

Nothing really exciting here. Ended up not playing my first picks here.

My cards (in order of drafting):
Minors: Clay Roof, Carp Pond, Chicken Coop, Baker’s Oven, Rake, Outhouse, Clapper
Occupations: Clay Worker, Berry Picker, Hedge Keeper, Mendicant, Animal Tamer, House Steward, Smallholder

R1 (Fences):

Pawn: Occupation (Clay Worker)
durn: Day Labourer (+2f)
MSly: 3 wood
Pawn: 2 wood + 1 clay
durn: SP + nothing
MSly: Plows 1 field

I open the game with my first pick occupation. I’m a bit surprised to see durn to take DL with his first action.

Current status:
Pawn: 2 wood rooms / 2 people / 2f / 2W / 1C
durn: 2 wood rooms / 2 people / 5f
MSly: 2 wood rooms / 2 people / 3f / 1 field / 3W

R2 (MIMI):

durn: 2 clay
MSly: Occupation (Woodcutter)
Pawn: 3 wood + 1 clay
durn: MIMI (Fireplace, -2C)
MSly: 2 reed
Pawn: SP + Outhouse (-1W & 1C)

I was hoping to get the first FP, but durn beat me to it. Luckily sheeps haven’t shown up yet. I get some early points by playing Outhouse.

Current status:
Pawn: 2 wood rooms / 2 people / 2f / 4W / 1C
durn: 2 wood rooms / 2 people / 5f
MSly: 2 wood rooms / 2 people / 3f / 1 field / 3W / 2R

R3 (Sheep):

Pawn: 4 wood + 1 clay
durn: 3 clay
MSly: 4 wood
Pawn: 3 food from the fishing spot
durn: SP + nothing
MSly: Day Labourer (+2f)

I continued to gather room recources. Durn takes the clay again and takes SP with nothing second time. I manage to take the fishes.

Current status:
Pawn: 2 wood rooms / 2 people / 5f / 8W / 2C
durn: 2 wood rooms / 2 people / 5f / 3C
MSly: 2 wood rooms / 2 people / 5f / 1 field / 7W / 2R

R4 (Sow and/or Bake bread):

durn: Occupation (Lover, -4f & FG without room)
MSly: 4 wood
Pawn: 2 sheep, releasing one
durn: 2 clay
MSly: Build 1 room + 2 stables (-9W & 2R)
Pawn: SP + Clay Roof

Durn1818 opens with Lover setting himself with only 1 food. MasterSly takes the wood and I cause an upset by taking the sheep right under durn’s nose. Surprisingly he takes the clay instead of DL and writes the boiteajeux’s in-game chat:

“ok Pawndawan. Tu vas perdre. MasterSly a dores et déjà gagné la partie !”

I google-translate it and reply:

“Don't know about the winning part, but at least you secured the last place by taking four begging cards.”

I was hoping MasterSly would had gone for reed but he builds a room instead. Nevertheless I SP and play Clay Roof.

Current status:
Pawn: 2 wood rooms / 2 people / 1f / 8W / 4C / 1Sh
durn: 2 wood rooms / 3 people / 0f / 4 begging cards / 3C
MSly: 3 wood rooms / 2 people / 2 stable / 1f / 1 field / 2W

R5 (Renovation + MIMI):

Pawn: Occupation (Berry Picker, -1f)
durn: SP + nothing
MSly: 3 reed
Pawn: 4 wood, 1 clay & 1 food
durn: MIMI (Fireplace, -3C)
MSly: 4 wood
durn: 2 clay

I play my second occupation to really abuse wood spots. Durn1818 is obsessed with SP. MasterSly monopolises the reed. I take wood and durn builds another FP for him and denies clay from us once again.

Current status:
Pawn: 2 wood rooms / 2 people / 1f / 12W / 5C / 1Sh
durn: 2 wood rooms / 3 people / 0f / 4 begging cards / 4C
MSly: 3 wood rooms / 2 people / 1f / 2 stables / 1 field / 6W / 3R

R6 (Stone):

durn: 2 sheep, cooking one for 2f
MSly: 4 wood
Pawn: Build 1 room & 2 stables (-9W & 2C)
durn: 2 clay
MSly: 3 food from the fishing spot
Pawn: SP + Carp Pond
durn: 1 clay

Food is really scarce but still I won’t collect any. Durn1818 continues to obsess over clay.

Current status:
Pawn: 3 wood rooms / 2 people / 1f / 2 stables / 3W / 3C / 1Sh
durn: 2 wood rooms / 3 people / 2f / 4 begging cards / 7C / 1Sh
MSly: 3 wood rooms / 2 people / 4f / 2 stables / 1 field / 10W / 3R

R7 (Family Growth + Minor): Pawn: +1f from Carp Pond

Pawn: FG + Rake (-1W)
durn: DL (+2f)
MSly: 10 Fences (-10W, 2x2 square divided into two, with a stable in each pasture)
Pawn: 4 wood, 1 clay & 1 food
durn: MIMI (Cooking Heart, -4C)
MSly: Plow 1 field
durn: SP + nothing

Even thought I’m 3 food short, I choose family growth, committing to playing Mendicant later in the game. Durn takes DL blocking only 2 food spot for the rest of us. MasterSly builds fences and plows a field while I collect wood along some freebies. Durn1818 continues to hoard cooking improvements and obsessing over starting player. At this time it finally occurs to me that durn holds a personal vendetta against me and my sheep steal.

During harvest I take two begging cards and my opponents make it just barely without begging.

Current status:
Pawn: 3 wood rooms / 3 people / 0f / 2 begging cards / 2 stables / 6W / 4C / 1Sh
durn: 2 wood rooms / 3 people / 0f / 4 begging cards / 3C
MSly: 3 wood rooms / 2 people / 0f / 2 stables / 2 pastures / 2 fields / 3R

R8 (Vegetable):

durn: 2 clay
MSly: 3 stone
Pawn: 6 wood, 1 clay & 1 food
durn: MIMI (Cooking Heart, -5C)
MSly: FG
Pawn: 1 grain
durn: 1 stone
Pawn: 2 food from the fishing spot

This turn durn1818 openly admits in the game chat that he is letting and hoping MasterSly to build the Stone Oven. Durn then proceeds to build the last Cooking Heart. (Talk about grudge and obsession, eh?) I collect grain believing I still have a shot for the Clay Oven, boy I’m wrong as I soon notice.

MasterSly decideds to gamble and gets his third family member, therefore I sabotage the fishing spot.

Current status:
Pawn: 3 wood rooms / 3 people / 3f / 2 begging cards / 2 stables / 12W / 5C / 1G / 1Sh
durn: 2 wood rooms / 3 people / 0f / 4 begging cards / 1S
MSly: 3 wood rooms / 3 people / 0f / 2 stables / 2 pastures / 2 fields / 3R / 3S

R9 (Wild boar): Pawn: +1f from Carp Pond

durn: 3 clay
MSly: 1 clay
Pawn: 4 wood, 1 clay & 1 food
durn: 3 sheep, cooking 2 for 4 food
MSly: DL (+2f)
Pawn: SP
durn: MIMI (Clay Oven, -3C & 1S)
MSly: 1 vegetable
Pawn: 13 wood, 1 clay & 1food

Like a broken record durn1818 hoards clay once again and foils my plan on getting even one real food engine to play. MasterSly gets the clay for Stone Oven and I take trip to the woods twice. As my dreams of oven are shattered I quickly scan the play board and set my eyes on Basketmaker’s Workshop, hence the SP grab.

MasterSly’s FG gambit didn’t pay off and during harvest he eats a raw vegetable and is forced to take 3 begging cards.

Current status:
Pawn: 3 wood rooms / 3 people / 0f / 2 begging cards / 2 stables / 19W / 7C / 1G / 1Sh
durn: 2 wood rooms / 3 people / 0f / 4 begging cards
MSly: 3 wood rooms / 3 people / 0f / 3 begging cards / 2 stables / 2 pastures / 2 fields / 3R / 1C / 3S

R10 (Stone):

Pawn: 2 stone
durn: 3 wood
MSly: 1 grain
Pawn: 5 reed
durn: SP + Wooden Crane (-3W)
MSly: MIMI (Stone Oven, -3S & 1C)
Pawn: Plow 1 field
durn: 2 wild boars, cooking 1 for 3 food
MSly: 2 food from the fishing spot

I get my stone and reed needed for the BMW. MasterSly grabs grain and buys Stone Oven, but is a bit greedy and doesn’t bake. I punish him by plowing a field to set up bake block next turn.

You know something isn’t right in the game when your opponent takes his first wood of the game on turn 10 and spends them on Wooden Crane, oh well...

Current status:
Pawn: 3 wood rooms / 3 people / 0f / 2 begging cards / 2 stables / 1 field / 19W / 5R / 7C / 2S / 1G / 1Sh
durn: 2 wood rooms / 3 people / 3f / 4 begging cards / 1Wb
MSly: 3 wood rooms / 3 people / 2f / 3 begging cards / 2 stables / 2 pastures / 2 fields / 3R / 1G

R11 (Cattle): Pawn: +1f from Carp Pond

durn: 4 wood
MSly: DL (+2f)
Pawn: Sow 1 grain
durn: 3 stone
MSly: Occupation (Land Agent, -1f)
Pawn: 3 wood, 1 clay & 1 food
durn: MIMI (Joinery, -2W & 2S)
MSly: 1 vegetable + 1 grain (thanks to Land Agent)
Pawn: Renovate to clay + BMW (-4C, 2R & 2S)

Durn tries to catch ‘em all and collects some wood for Joinery. I’m forced to renovate sin order to get the Basketmaker’s Workshop. MasterSly spends three actions to get three food, thanks to my sow/bake blocking.

The harvest is grim for all of us. I eat reed and grain, durn1818 cooks the last boar and MasterSly’s high-carb diet consists of raw vegetables and cereal.

Current status:
Pawn: 3 clay rooms / 3 people / 0f / 2 begging cards / 2 stables / 1 field (2G) / 22W / 2R / 4C / 1Sh
durn: 2 wood rooms / 3 people / 0f / 4 begging cards / 2W / 1S
MSly: 3 wood rooms / 3 people / 1f / 3 begging cards / 2 stables / 2 pastures / 2 fields / 3R

R12 (FG without room):

durn: 2 food from the fishing spot
MSly: 1 grain
Pawn: DL (+2f)
durn: 3 stone
MSly: 1 vegetable + 1 grain
Pawn: 15 fences (-15W)
durn: FG without room
MSly: SP + Duck Pond
Pawn: 2 cattle

Food spots are the rage. I start to collect animals.

Current status:
Pawn: 3 clay rooms / 3 people / 2f / 2 begging cards / 2 stables / 4 pastures / 1 field (2G) / 7W / 2R / 4C / 1Sh / 2Ca
durn: 2 wood rooms / 4 people / 2f / 4 begging cards / 2W / 4S
MSly: 3 wood rooms / 3 people / 1f / 3 begging cards / 2 stables / 2 pastures / 2 fields / 3R / 2G / 1V

R13 (Plow and/or Sow): Pawn: +1f from Carp Pond, MSly: +1f from Duck Pond

MSly: 1 vegetable + 1 grain
Pawn: DL (+2f)
durn: FG without room
MSly: Plow 1 field
Pawn: 3 wild boar
durn: 6 wood
MSly: Sow 1G & 1V + Bake bread (2G to 8f)
Pawn: Occupation (Mendicant, -1f)
durn: 4 sheep, cooking all for 8 food.
durn: 3 reed

Durn1818 gets the fifth sheep lover in his crowded (with major improvements) 2-room wooden hut. First harvest where nobody needs to eat raw grain/vegetables or receive begging cards... HUZZAH!

Current status:
Pawn: 3 clay rooms / 3 people / 1f / 2 begging cards / 2 stables / 4 pastures / 1 field (2G) / 7W / 2R / 4C / 1Sh / 4Wb / 3Ca
durn: 2 wood rooms / 5 people / 1f / 4 begging cards / 8W / 3R / 4S
MSly: 3 wood rooms / 3 people / 3f / 3 begging cards / 2 stables / 2 pastures / 3 fields (2G + 1V) / 3R / 2G / 3V

R14 (Renovation + fences): MSly: +1f from Duck Pond

MSly: 5 clay
Pawn: Plow 1 field and sow 1 grain
durn: 2 food from the fishing spot
MSly: Renovates to clay (-3c & 1R)
Pawn: DL (+2f)
durn: 5 clay
MSly: Bake bread (1G to 4f)
Pawn: 1 vegetable
durn: 6 wood
durn: Renovate to clay + 14 fences (-2C, 1R & 14W)
durn: 2 cattle, cooking both for 6 food

Talk about broken record, fishes to durn and DL to me. Durn1818 adds insult to injury with a misclick and cooks his cattle with Fireplace instead of Cooking Heart and receives his fifth begging card.

Current status:
Pawn: 3 clay rooms / 3 people / 0f / 2 begging cards / 2 stables / 4 pastures / 2 fields (2G) / 7W / 2C / 1Sh / 5Wb / 4Ca
durn: 2 clay rooms / 5 people / 0f / 5 begging cards / 3C / 2R / 4S
MSly: 3 clay rooms / 3 people / 2f / 3 begging cards / 2 stables / 2 pastures / 3 fields (1G) / 2C / 2R / 2G / 4V

Well, what more can I say. Sometimes unkown online opponents can offer (un)pleasant surprises. Comments and question are welcomed. Thanks for reading, hopefully I didn't make any tracking mistakes.

Nice report. What a bizarre game. And to think, if you'd set the Clay Worker on the clay in Round One, you'd have had a fireplace in Round Two, and the game would have proceeded in an utterly different direction. Snowballs rolling down hills....

I've never seen such a brutal game. Kudos to you for hanging in there. Well done to everyone for finishing the game even though it was so harsh.

Thanks. Yes the game would've been very different had I taken the clay. Though, I was too worried of the possibility of giving MasterSly 5 wood on round one, that I didn't even consider getting clay.

But that's one the beauties of Agricola. One decission can branch the game into completely different direction. The "what if" permutations of the game are almost endless.

This has been a very interesting game. If all he wanted to do was play kingmaker, all he had to do was take SP with his first move every turn, essentially giving MSly SP without any effort.

I'm not sure which way the draft rotates, but assuming it was clockwise for both, durn probably had the strongest draft. 1st pick Lover, 2nd pick Seasonal Worker/Riding Plow. If he got Duck Pond + Gardener + Sleeping Corner as well, he should have a relatively easy way to coast to victory.

R1 DL, and then SP is a clear sign he has Lover, but not getting it out on R2 was definitely a mistake (unless Lover has the FOTM restriction of only being allowed on R3). Afterwards Seasonal Worker keeps his food up, and if he has Sleeping Corner, he will end up with 5 people in a 2-room house with relatively no effort...

Anyway, as the game turned out, you got a good win out of what looks to be the harshest game I've ever seen. Good job!
