"Mithral Hall has been reclaimed, but work remains to be done. For the first time since Shimmergloom was defeated, nearby creatures have grown restless and several dwarves have gone missing. What new foe do the Companions of the Hall now face?"

Chapter 1

In the very first move, as our heroes are all gathered around the ladder leading into the caverns, Wulfgar attracts the attention of a drow wizard who drives into their midst and proceeds to blast everybody with fire. Caught by surprise, everybody took heavy damage except for the halfling who merely got singed.

With feline reaction, Catti-Brie quickly spins around into a Heartseeker stance and bulls-eyes the wizard on a natural 20. She then turns back around the corner and proceeds to explore the broken door before her, but is caught by the horrifying howl of a hypnotic spirit.

Bruenor rushes behind the spirit and swings at it with his notched axe, but only strikes thin air. Spiders from the next room swarm in and poison both the dwarf and archer.

Seeing his companions in trouble, Drizzt Do'Urden rushes to their aid. The sword Icingdeath passes through the spirit with no effect, but Twinkle dispatches the spider swarm. Drizzt then dances behind the broken door to find another hypnotic spirit around the corner, but is able to withstand its horrifying howl.

Sensing that magic would be required against these ghostly apparitions, the halfling Regis uses his ruby pendant to strike out at the first spirit, defeating it. Fortune smiles and cures Catti-Brie of her poison. Regis then strolls over to her and uses his potion of healing to heal most of her wounds.

Chapter 2

His companions having run off to fight monsters in the opposite direction, Wulfgar decides instead to continue exploring the narrow passage from which the drow wizard had appeared. He runs into a puny goblin who rushes him with a crude dagger, drawing blood.

Catti-Brie, following Regis' lead, dispatches the remaining hypnotic spirit easily with the wand of magic missiles she had taken off the dead drow wizard. She is then able to rest briefly, regaining her full health and and recharging the magic wand. Passing by Drizzt, she finds another narrow passage which appears to be flooded. But then the water rises up and rushes at her, and Catti-Brie narrowly escapes the wave.

Still suffering from the last vestiges of the poison spider bites, Bruenor staggers towards a volcanic vent, and in a severe turn of bad luck stumbls into the claws of the drider Dinin Do'Urden; as well as startling a flock of dire Corbys. He evades the brunt of the Corby attack, taking minor damage, then nearly gets hit by Dinin's sword but got lucky and her attack missed.

Between the two powerful foes in separate caverns, our hero Drizzt chooses the mightier challenge and rushes to the dwarf's aid. He attacks the drider with a twin strike, dispatching the spider creature. He then searches beyond the volcanic vent she had been nesting in, and is not only cursed by the Mark of Lolth but also grazed by the barbed arrow of a goblin archer.

Regis then hits the water elemental with a blast from his magic mace with such skill (a natural 20) that he is able to increase his strength and abilities. He then runs back to the entrance in an attempt to sneak up on the goblin archer from behind, but is taken aback by the discovery of the drow glyph.

"A noise coming from a tunnel leading to the drow city of Menzoberranzan reveals the cause of the disappearances: The drow have returned! A new enemy has arrived along with a bevy of body-guards. You must defeat this villain and save Mithral Hall."

It is Yvonnel Baenre, matron mother to the drow! And she is not alone — gathered behind here were a goblin champion, hunting drake, drow duelist, and most domineering of all, a feral troll.

Yvonnel Baenre begins the final battle by shooting a blast of fire at the halfling, which Regis narrowly evades, taking minor damage. The hunting drake, smelling blood, leaps past the goblin archer to face Drizzt.

Chapter 3

The barbarian, sensing the dangerous threat nearby, ignores the puny goblin in front of him and hurries back through the narrow passage, throwing himself between Regis and the villain drow. In a rampage he attacks, and with a charmed hammer deals a fair amount of damage. The ghost of the spider queen curses him with another Mark of Lolth, and Drizzt feels the reverberations of the curse's pain. Yvonnel retaliates in a direct hit with a poisoned dagger, and then backs away under cover of the troll.

The little goblin cutter, feeling left out, runs through the narrow passage in an attempt to catch up to the barbarian.

Catti-Brie, still threatened by the water elemental, runs past it through the broken door and around the bend, shifts into the Falling Hail stance, and shoots back at it with the hope that her arrow will turn in mid-flight. Amazingly, it does. The arrow shot from Taulmaril strikes true at the water elemental, finishing it off. Fortune smiles on her and she cures Wulfgar of the drow's poison. But a Baruchie colony which she had overlooked in her haste inflicts her with poison instead.

The feral troll at this point advances on the barbarian and swipes at him, impacting with such force that Wulfgar is knocked back into the narrow passage at the feet of a stunned goblin cutter.

Bruenor Battlehammer rushes past Drizzt and gets between the hunting drake and goblin archer, swinging his notched axe and killing the drake instantly. He then head-butts the goblin archer for good measure, taking the cowering creature out of the picture. A spellweb immobilizes the valiant dwarf, but he shrugs it off with the spider mask he obtained from the fallen drake.

Yvonnel Baenre, having been deprived of her target by the troll, channels Lolth's fury, bringing down the Mark of Lolth curse on Bruenor which in turn does damage to Drizzt and Wulfgar. The goblin champion then rushes at Regis, striking him with a vicious axe.

Drizzt runs towards Yvonnel, placing himself between the drow duelist and feral troll. He strikes at the troll with Icingdeath, then with his other blade Twinkle takes out the drow duelist, dancing around the enemy corpse to position himself for battle against the matron mother. But our hero suffers another blow from the Mark of Lolth, as do the barbarian and dwarf. Yvonnel, seeing that Drizzt is near death, attacks him with her poisoned dagger confident that he will be easy prey. Drizzt just barely blocks the attack, but a scratch from the dagger leaves him poisoned.

Regis, feeling especially small next to the towering troll, moves in underneath it with a distracting attack which lands a critical hit, killing the massive beast. Our small hero immediately conducts a battlefield promotion for Wulfgar. But then the air turns stale, and while Wulfgar is able to withstand its detrimental effects, Drizzt succumbs and falls to the ground, motionless.

Yvonnel, seeing her foe succumb at last, fires a blast towards the halfling which knocks him back towards the cavern entrance.

Chapter 4

Wulfgar, ignoring the flustered goblin cutter, runs back to face Yvonnel. He swings Aegis-Fang at her in a great cleave which only manages to graze her, but while she is recovering from the attack he treats Drizzt with some healing herbs, bringing the drow ranger back to his feet. But just behind the villain Wulfgar sees a dark chasm, and over the bridge, another goblin cutter.

Oh, joy.

Yvonnel strikes out at her new opponent, poisoning him with her dagger and then retreating over the chasm bridge. The first goblin cutter sees the halfing who had been knocked back in front of him in chapter 3, and rushes in for a quick stab. The second goblin cutter, trading places with his mistress, stabs at the barbarian again to deal further damage.

Cattie-Brie, too far away from Yvonnel to assist in the main battle, joins the dwarf and fires a heartseeker arrow at the goblin champion. On a natural 20 she takes the goblin out and intimidates the goblin cutter next to Regis back into the narrow passage.

At that moment, a volcanic explosion simultaneously takes out both Wulfgar and Drizzt.

With no one to oppose her, Yvonnel Baenre channels Lolth's fury once again in an attempt to overrun the heroes. But with only a couple of insignificant goblins remaining, her fury is wasted.

The slow-moving dwarf makes his way past the two fallen champions to menace the goblin cutter at the chasm bridge with his notched axe. It fells the goblin with ease, but a volcanic spray takes its vengeance on him. Yvonnel seizes the advantage and finishes off Bruenor with a blast of fire.

Near death and still poisoned, Drizzt surges back to his feet and races across the chasm bridge to fight the villain again. He strikes first with Icingdeath, and deals heavy damage with the Belt of Storm Giant Strength he won from the drow duelist. His second strike, however, misses. Behind the drow matron he finds a secret cave, which happens to be empty. The wounded Yvonnel stabs Drizzt again with her poisoned dagger, then runs back to the volcanic vent.

Regis, recovering from the earlier fire blast, tumbles back into the room with the drow glyph and attempts to use his ruby pendant against Yvonnel. But the pendant fails him, and from the shadows to his left a water elemental arises. Ignoring the halfling, Yvonnel fires a blast back at Drizzt, which knocks him back into the secret cave. The water elemental knocks Regis off his feet with a surging wave.

Chapter 5

Wulfgar surges back to his feet with renewed strength, right in front of a very surprised Yvonnel Baenre. He grabs the villainess in a bear hug, cracking her ribs but not quite finishing her off. Having done damage, he runs past the drow glyph to intercept the now-panicked goblin cutter who he saw was about to move again. But on the way his is ambushed by a quickling, which just nicks him and then scurries off.

A desperately enranged Yvonnel lashes out with a blast of fire at Regis, the closest hero in sight, knocking the hapless halfling back once again and killing him.

The emboldened goblin cutter rushes towards the barbarian with his dagger, inflicting damage.

Cattie-Brie, having seen all her companions fall and realizing that this is the company's last opportunity to defeat the drow, fires a clustered shot towards Yvonnel. The arrows strike true and Yvonnel Baenre, matron mother, falls at last. Calling Drizzt out of the secret cavern, Cattie-Brie joins her surviving heroes leaving behind a now-dormant pool of water and demoralized goblin, and they return to Mithral Hall.

This 5-player adventure took me about five hours to play (fielding all characters myself,) with frequent interruptions to chronicle this narrative. The result was well worth it.
