Which role card is the most overrated? Not necessarily the weakest, but the one that has the most hype in relation to its relative effect on the game?

Poll

Archivist
Containment Specialist
Dispatcher

I voted CS. I tend to overrate it myself. It seems like a really effective role. Often you can prevent a lot of outbreaks with it in a single turn. But I find I often lose with it. The problem is, whenever the CS does one of those awesome turns, they leave around a lot of cities with 2 cubes in them. No problem, every time they get back to 3, the CS will revisit them. But the number of cities with 2 cubes tends to gradually increase, and subsequently there are too many cities with 3 cubes, and the CS can't get to all of them. Neither can the rest of the team. Or you get a new epidemic next to one of those cities with 2 cubes, and you get a chain reaction before you get a turn.

The CS is most effective if there is an area of concentrated activity, and with a large number of players. Then the CS can stay in that area most of the time, while the other team members move around dealing with other problems as they crop up.

I just got the game so I'm no expert on this but I'm curious why the Medic is considered by so many to be overrated. He seems powerful and was very much so in the one game he appeared in. It certainly seemed like he earned his reputation so why do others say it's "overrated"?

Updating as I have now played the game over 400 times. I still think my vote of Researcher holds true. The Medic is powerful, and has earned his reputation. No, he's not an automatic win, but I think his win ratio is still better than any other role's.

I think the Researcher is difficult because she has to follow around another player for her power to really take effect, and can end up leaving the world to burn as she passes off cards. Not nearly as effective at generating cures as one would believe, in my opinion.

I think it's because having the Medic focuses you on the board, which is not how you win. I know I've lost a few games because we accidentally had the Dispatcher and Medic only dealing with the board situation, rather than actually curing any diseases.

I totally hear that and I think it's absolutely true, but do you think that's player error or just the role being over-hyped?

As it stands now, the Medic is the most over-hyped role.

I think he is because his power is truly limited to healing the board. Yes, he does only focus on fixing the immediate threats, but not the overall goal.

I find that I never need the medic to win the game and rather NOT have him in my team.

The only time, I find him good role is when there has been some diseases are cured and now he just needs to walk into cities to cure them and makes him better than the Containment Specialist.

He may also be good way of eradicating diseases, but could still be tricky depending on what's happening and diseases have been cured yet.

I've been playing a ton of Pandemic on the iPad with OTB.

Fantastic implementation.

That said, I wish the game tracked stats of teams that win and teams that lose so I can see if my feelings of overrated/underrated are true.

Favorite role: operations expert.

Roles I like to see: researcher, epidemiologist, quarantine expert.

Roles I don't like to see: generalist, troubleshooter, contingency planner.

EDIT: to clarify, all of my solo games are with 4 roles.

Since iPad games are so quick, I've now played a *lot* of different role combos at 5, 6, and 7 epidemics while testing the UI and Event implementations for Z-Man.

I found that taking roles you aren't used to and playing them at 6 epidemics is an excellent way to improve your play.

For example, learning to win with just Generalist/Troubleshooter or Contingency Planner/Quarantine Specialist at 6 and 7 epidemics really drove home the point that they require different tactics than playing, say, either Scientist/Researcher or Dispatcher/Medic.

Another interesting challenge is to play Troubleshooter/Containment Specialist/Archivist/Epidemiologist at 6 Epidemics, followed by Medic/Researcher/Operations Expert/Dispatcher, also at 6 Epidemics. I found I could win with both groups equally well, once I got used to the different tactics involved.

(I personally believe that Scientist/Researcher is the easiest role combo to win at 7 epidemics, but that playing them is almost completely different than playing any other role combo. Your mileage may vary on this.)
