A weird question here. For some crazy reason, I got to wondering about this last night. What professions are least likely to have gamers in them, specifically hobby gamers such as ourselves as opposed to videogamers who are far more mainstream and widespread than we?

Politicians? Likely to avoid anything that might negatively affect their reputation maybe?

Law Enforcement? I think I have a tendency to stereotype police officers and FBI workers and such as too serious of people to be be interested in something so, well, geeky. But then I've definitely seen occasional posts here and at sites for other games (like for Heroclix) where some officers were definitely fans so I really don't know.

There's supposedly a fair number of wargamers from the military so no barking up that tree.

Doctors maybe?

Which professions seem least likely?

I knew of a police officer who was an avid Warmachine/Hordes player at my FLGS.

True Story: He came in one night to see what was going on at the store (on duty). He had to leave because a man called 911 complaining about his neighbor's cow had gotten out of its pen and was eating his landscaping...again...and he was going to shoot it himself this time.

At a miniatures convention in MA, there was (may still be - I haven't been in a while) a state trooper who ran the best Desperado games ever.

I know plenty of doctors who game.

I play Scrabble every Sunday with a farmer couple - we've played over 1200 Scrabble games since the mid-1980s.

I've known two political aides who are avid gamers.

Hmmm - I honestly don't know of any profession that would be unlikely to be gamers. I've gamed with grocers, an undertaker, gardeners, secretaries, actors, etc., etc.

I find it funny that my game group is as diverse a bunch of misfits as a group of D&D characters:
Military pilot
Nurse
Librarian
Accountant
INfo Tech guy
Rock band singer

I'd say we cover the gamut.

Why would profession matter at all as to whether someone enjoys games or not?

Wouldn't that just be a steroetype?

I used to game with a guy who used to do some sort of junior league pro-wrestling. He spent a couple of years after high school travelling around Texas doing wrestling expositions at county fairs and stuff. This was all scripted, entertainment type wrestling, not competitive wrestling.

That being said, he was one of the best CCG players I've had the honor of playing with and a hell of an RPG game master too.

I'll bet the percentage of astronaut gamers isn't that low, though.

I played in PBEM games years ago. One of my allies in a game complained to me (by one of our e-mails) that some rude person had run him off the road that day. I learned subsequently that his full time occupation was riding a bike along the roads picking up cans, scrap metal, and recyclables to sell. Apparently, he did quite well at it.

I think the OP's point was not about stereotyping but rather what professions are least likely to be associated with being a gamer, kind of like the inverse of those job/personality aptitude tests in high school. Personality does affect hobbies, just as it affects job selection, to some degree.

Also, if some wonderful data collector wanted to, they could go here and start compiling some stats. Granted, it would be hard to answer all of the occupations of that gamers do not have.

My cousin was state police chief, and last thanksgiving he saw me playing AoE with some other family members. He sort of made light of it at first, but then he seemed interested, and asked a lot of questions about it. He said he really liked history and thought it was neat that some board games tried to simulate it accurately rather than just be monopoly! (No I didn't explain the difference between euro games and war games . . . )
