In the rules, having the Agriculture acculturation allows you to farm empty slots next to your homeland, making them habitable for your species. What if your homeland goes extinct due to greenhouse effects or being replaced by a new tile coming onto the board? Is this no longer a useful acculturation, or can a new homeland be designated, if only for purposes of farming empty slots next to it? If the farms are still empty after the homeland goes extinct, could they continue on as farms, or do they go extinct as well?

Also, is this only good for a particular species? For instance, if your archetype species has Agriculture and expands into another species, would a map piece of this species be able to live off of the farms of the first species, (assuming that the archetype species is still in play, etc)?

Thanks!

Hi,
The agriculture acculturation is tricky at best. If your homeland goes extinct, your new ability is useless since you have no homeland and no tiles qualify for the skill. Also, if the greenhouse marker goes up, empty tiles become sea tiles, and you need to have an M gene to be able to survive there. In addition, any greenhouse shift is likely to bring another biome to that slot and unless your animal is able to feed off it, it will die. Finally, if you expand another species, it does not inherit Agriculture (it can only inherit one type of roadrunner and one type of dietary DNA and no acculturation) so, technically, you cannot expand a new species into an empty slot next to your homeland as it wouldn't be able to eat there.

Agreed. Never saw it used properly, at least.

This is what I figured and how we played it. Definitely appreciate another confirmation of the rules. Thanks!

This seems to have changed - from Phil (Yahoo! Group) today:

9.2e Homelands being farmed are immune to extinction.

For the record, the Living Rules contain four rules changes:
3.5d During set-up, immigrants are discarded instead of being returned to the pool.

3.5e During set-up of the 3 and 4 player game, use two displays instead of one. Per 5.0d, ignore the events for the upper display.

9.2e Homelands being farmed are immune to extinction.

11.0 P DNA adds to migration range.

Also there are three new optional rules:
4.1e and f. Two optional rules for roadrunner and genetic drift.
18.0b Optional rule to draw from Cenozoic as soon as Mesozoic runs out.

The Living Rules (posted on the Megafauna Yahoo site) also have some clarifications and grammar updates.
