In the first months of the war the germans had really problems with torpedoe duds. Nearly 50 % were duds! Especially the first aces like Prien, Schepke and Kretschmer (whose torpedoe skills were above average) complained about this problem so Dönitz himself took action and forced the torpedoe building branch to improve the efforts. After his attack in scapa flow Prien said to Dönitz: "How shall I fight with a blunt sword?"

So for all out there who think this game is far too easy even with all the new optional rules, try in addition this:

In "the Beginning" campagin when attacking with torpedoes roll a die:
1 - 4 dud => no damage roll
5 - 10 no effect => normal damage roll

When using a torpedoe spread (new rule with one die roll!) with at least four torpedoes a dud appears only when rolling a 1 or 2.

In the happy time it was routine and usual for the u-boats to damage ships with torpedoes and to give them the final shot with the 88 gun. The rules reflect this practice quiet good.
Later, primarily in 1943 (the hunted campaign period) most of the time this method couldn't be used because of the high risk of detection by enemy aircrafts. As a matter of fact, beginning with this period, the guns were often dismounted in an effort to give the boats a better diving/evasion rating. The following variant take this in account:

In the campaign "the hunted" the final shot must be done with torpedoes. No Gunnery allowed.

Marc,
I like your optional rules. They do make sense given the issues the U-boat commanders had to deal with early on. Glad you reduced the probability of a dud with the new torpedo spread rule. That would have really been rough at 1-4 for duds.

I haven't tried them out yet... Been busy with another game.
