I frequently find myself in the situation where i have 3 players for game night. I often pull out smallworld. Any suggestions for this as i feel most are good for 2 or 4+! (Feel free to point me towards another link)

Thanks, Ben

IMO Dominion is great with 2, 3, or 4. It is also easy to learn and popular with most everyone I show it to (everyone other than total game haters so far). It is not for everyone though (I can't understand why...). You should check out the "don't play this if..." review if you are not familiar.

Maria is great for 3. Actually it's made for 3.
Games like Quarriors! and Dominion play great for three as well. I personally prefer 3 player games of Caylus too. I think Brass: Lancashire plays well with 3 also.

Notre Dame is best with 3. Any more, and you have very little influence over the one or two who never get your cards.

Gates of Loyang is good with 3.

3-players is really tough for my group and limits our options. There are a handful of games, however, that still work well for 3-players.

In my collection, we use Dominion, Innovation, and Citadels. (These are also my preferred 2-player games, and among my favorite games overall.)

Carson City and Evo should also work well, but I've never played them in 3-player games.

Co-ops such as Forbidden Island, Flash Point: Fire Rescue, and Defenders of the Realm are not suitable for every group, but I always keep a few handy because they work well with any number of players.

I like China with three as mentioned above. Also, if you want something about the same weight as Small World, try Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries which is made for three.

I really enjoy playing Talisman (Revised 4th Edition) with three or more players. I enjoy it with two players as well, but the real fun starts at 3.

You could take a look at City of Thieves.
Although I have never played this with three people - some say it is the "sweet spot"
It is fairly light - but I have had fun with this as a two player game.

I really enjoy 3-4 player games. 4-player gives it a nice competitive feel, but 3-player is most time effective.

I recommend Catan, as I have had several fun games with it with only 3 players.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! Yes Dominion is great with 3 players. I almost forgot about that one....I've grown tired of it after 500+ plays though.

Lordrahvin, i'm surprised you said citadels. I really enjoy that game but feel that 3 players is the ONLY format it doesn't work in. : )

Geosphere, I really like the idea of neuroshima hex and have played it a handful of times but get frustrated with the luck of the draw aspect (not drawing a military piece opposed to a movement or special token is often extremely detrimental)

As for all the others i'll get on checking those out. : )

Thanks again, Ben

Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization is, pretty clearly, best with three.
San Marco also, IMHO, is best with three.

Brass: Lancashire plays well with 3.
Roads & Boats plays well with 3.
Caylus plays well with 3.
