What would people think of altering the drawing of tech tiles to include a preview of what's coming out next turn - so when adding new tech tiles (at start of round) you move them from a preview area and draw new tiles for the preview. This would keep the randomness but allow a bit more advanced planning.

I like it. Might cause interesting games of chicken as people consider passing earlier than they'd like to in order to ensure they get first crack at the new tech the following round.

I like it. Tried it this way and enjoyed it; however, we decided to only reveal some of the techs. One time nothing good was out, then surprise surprise... The 6 engine, star bases and monoliths came out all at once! Talk about game changing.

Yeah, it sounds good. Like letting half of the techs from next turn(rounded up or down) be in the preview area.

Another thing. You could also allow players to be able to research these previewed techs if they want to, but they would have to use more science than normally, maybe 2, 3 or 4.

Off topic.
It could be fun to have some(1-3?) "joker" techs, not belonging to any of the 3 research lines, such that the player can decide where to place them. This would make it easier to reach high VP from a science line, but at the cost of not being able to take all techs from that line. F.x. if you put two joker techs in your Grid line, then there are two Grid techs that you simply do not have room for on your player mat, so you may not have room for that Antimatter Cannon that suddenly is vital for your survival!
