Edit: By board game, I mean anything that falls under the auspices of BGG, including CCGs.

I would think about taking out the ccg tag, I know I have spent over $500 on magic, while dominion+intrigue would be my biggest board game purchase at 75ish+ sleeves at...$20? $95?

If we're including CCG/LCG, then my amount would be insanely larger.

I included tournament entry fees, coaching, books and transport costs and easily shot past the end of the table. Some clarification would be good. Tournament Bridge, Chess, Go (etc) players spend thousands over the years.

I'm inclined to let such peripheral costs be included, especially as you've set the precedent now. I admit that tournament fees where there's a realistic chance of making a profit are something of a grey area, but I suspect that won't count for many respondents.

There's a difference between buying one standalone game or a game system like Magic the Gathering or Advanced Squad Leader. The amount I spent on the latter is nearly as insane as the amount some spent on the former.

Does the plural "Base Game plus Expansions" count as a single unit for "A board game" which is phrased in the singular?

As I'm reading it, I should be answering for the highest cost I will pay for a single unit. Ergo, Base Game Only.

In which case, my actual highest CCG expenditure is... $12, for a single starter pack. Each unit of expansion cost less than that.

Really, it's the only fair way to go. Dominion and Intrigue... is that 2 separate board games, or one combined?

Better yet, Castle Ravenloft and Wrath of Ashardalon.
They are NOT expansions of each other, nor intended to be... but they are fully compatible. Do I add them together or not?

That being said, I am answering for each item separately.
Each separate box is a separate limit, even if combined afterwards.

I replied $200 or something, as I believe that a the count is "game+ expansion".

Exchange rates aren't really relevant, since a $40 US game will be imported in Europe form of a 40 € game.

Including CCGs, man, I can't even calculate where Magic and Star Wars CCG have put me.

Otherwise, I think Dominant Species is the most expensive game I paid for.

I presume the OP's intention was regarding the purchase of a single game. Transportation, tournament fees, coaching fees -- those are monies spent to play the games, not to buy them. Tournament Bridge players spend thousands to be players, not on a deck of cards.

I included shipping as that usually costs me more than the game itself!

If shipping is necessary for you to get the game, then of course it should be included. Gasoline and travel fees to get to play the game is not.

A question made interesting by the answers - there are people on BGG who would never pay more than £30 for a board game? I want to know more, do they only enjoy light games, do they consider there are enough cheaper games that they dont need to spend more, or what?

That said, my answer is skewed by my understanding of the question - at some point I intend to have money to spend, at which point I may well buy a certain game that I currently cannot afford. I have voted the amount I expect that to cost, even if I cant afford to buy it for the next year or two.

I've bought a number of $100 games. The limited edition of Puerto Rico is the latest. Ikusa before that.

On the other hand, I've invested maybe a $1000 on just my one heavily varianted and extended copy of Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition.

Ditto, the limited edition was my largest investment into a board game. I once played Magic and that cost me a lot in the past. A couple of my friends each bought their own box of booster packs in the past.

Yeah, okay. I clearly didn't think the questions through well enough, but after 318 votes it's a bit late to change anything.
