As a family, we watch series on DVD.

When we watched all of Buffy and Angel, we did so in broadcast order so crossovers and global events worked out.

We're going to watch all Star Trek next. All series, all movies, in actual release order.

Where can I get a timeline for viewing order?

If you can't find a chart, or you need it NOW, you can do what I did when trying to mesh TNG and DS9; pull up a list of episodes for each from Wikipedia in two separate tabs...then compare 'first broadcast' dates.

Or, you can wait about an hour, and Chit Chat will hook you up.

Yeah, we did that meshing with Buffy/Angel.

Its annoying. And I'd like the movies in there.

I figured Chit Chat would be my source.

Ah, Man that's a totally awesome way of doing it. We watched DS9 a couple of years back, and are watching TNG now.

Pfffttt......

Like that would take an hour.

Six minutes is actually about twice as long as I expected.

Prison Break. It's implausible on the level of Alias, but it's compelling and entertaining with cliffhangery goodness. (At least the first two seasons, because I haven't watched much past that.)

I should have been more specific. Another Star Trek series.

We are rewatching it a 3rd time through now. On Netflix. Even though we own the DVDs.

Man, having seen that Wiki list I would love to do it all again. But I don't think I could persude the Missus to go through it again.

My advice is: Don't bother.

Watch TNG front to back (stick with it for the first two seasons, it gets better). Then watch DS9 front to back. Skip the movies, they suck. Really.

No really.

TNG has a great last episode and that's where it should finish. You do not want to view those 2-hour long pieces of crap made by people who think that the movies should be for everyone and his grandmother, not for those who like Star Trek. And that Star Trek should be all "action-adventure". And who cares about characters having been formed by seven seasons of history -- you can forget about all that and turn them into action-adventure heroes! Bruce Willis style!

Sad. Really sad.

Anyway, there is very little crossover between TNG and DS9; the little that there is has no influence on the seasons. It is not like in Buffy and Angel where Buffy suddenly has a piece of equipment that Angel acquired and sent to her.

Being a life long, yet recent return viewer of the Star Trek franchise I thought I'd throw in my thoughts.

Personally all of the TV series can stand alone and I'd recommend watching them as they aired chronologically. There is some cross over from previous series to the next but not enough to really matter. The order I would recommend would be:

The Original Series
TOS movies
The Next Generation
TNG movies
Deep Space Nine
Voyager
Enterprise
New JJ Abrams Trek movies

And unlike other posters I actually recommend watching all of the movies for no other reason than I simply enjoy the mythos and relish more canon to come, whenever that may be. It is for this reason that I added Enterprise and put it at the end. While not very popular, the show did have some merit and tried to answer questions brought up throughout the years from previous shows. Being a prequel series one would think to watch it first, but I think it makes much more sense to watch it after almost everything else.

Now if we were talking Stargate, this would be a different post. Those series are a lot more convoluted as to when and what to watch.

Bottom line... enjoy!

I've seen them all already, as has my wife. This is to introduce the kids to Trek.

If it is for your kids, I would not make them suffer the really awful episodes. I watched TNG with my daughter. We did the pilot, and half-a-dozen season one episodes, before going on to season two. Of season two we did about half the episodes, and from then on we watched most episodes (yeah, we skipped "Menage-a-Troi").

First season, only do:
- Encounter at Farpoint (and only because it is required viewing to enjoy the very last episode)
- Where No One Has Gone Before
- Lonely Among Us
- The Battle
- The Big Goodbye
- Datalore (but only if you really see a need to watch any "Lore" episodes)
- 11001001
- Home Soil
- Coming of Age
- The Arsenal of Freedom
- Symbiosis
- Conspiracy

Second season, only do:
- Where Silence Has Lease
- Elementary, My Dear Data
- The Schizoid Man
- A Matter of Honor
- The Measure of a Man
- Times Squared
- Q Who
- The Emissary
- Peak Performance

From third season on, most shows are watchable (except "Ménage à Troi", of course).
