I've been looking into the world of deck-building games because some of them (like Dominion) seem like really solid games. However, the artwork for Dominion is killing me. It just looks so...blah. I don't need a hugely thematic game, but it almost feels like they didn't even try to make Dominion interesting. Which is reflected in my lack of interest.

So what I'm looking for is a game like Dominion, but simply with more attractive-looking cards. I know it's kind of picky, but if I'm going to get a game, I should ideally enjoy all aspects of it, especially if it's going to steal table time from Space Hulk, which I cannot get enough of.

As points of reference, I'm not a huge fan of the Dungeon-crawler theme (which is keeping me away from titles like Thunderstone and Dungeon Twister), but I do love Catan, Puerto Rico, Agricola, etc. Games with simple yet well-done themes (in my personal opinion)

I own it, yet I haven't played it cause the rulebook made it sound exactly like Dominion, only with cutesy anime artwork.

You might take a look at:
Resident Evil Deck Building Game
It's based on the Resident Evil video game series, so it's heavy into monsters, zombies, etc. Not so much "Dungeon" themed as much as it's "Zombie" themed, so I'm not sure if that sits better with you or not. Instead of swords and magic, you have machine guns, shotguns, and combat knives. The "Copper", "Silver" and "Gold" cards from Dominion are "Ammo+10, Gold+10","Ammo+20, Gold+20", and "Ammo+30, Gold+30" cards in RE.

Another suggestion:
Star Trek Deck Building Game: The Next Generation
I have not played this yet, but I've heard really good things about it.

Eminent Domain would be right up your alley. It has the deck-building aspect, but it also is a role-selection game like Puerto Rico. And its a lot of fun.

Based on your post, I'd go with one of these two:

Ascension - For its wonderful artwork and interesting game play.
Eminent Domain - As mentioned before, for its interesting use of the role mechanic.

I hope this helps. Good luck and have fun!

Another game to look at is Core Worlds.

IMO, however, Dominion does deck building the best. Although games such as Eminent Domain and Core Worlds are more than just a deck building game...so I kind of judge them on a different scale.

Take a look at Quarriors! Yes, it's got plenty of theme, and very Dominion-esque.
