Last night I played Merchants and Marauders with two friends. We took three hours to play half or maybe 2/3rds of the game (admittedly we were learning and referring to the rules). It was 11pm and my pirate galleon had just been destroyed by a Dutch Man'O'War when we thought enough was enough.

The artwork is great, the production quality is great and it was an okay themed game BUT none of us felt immersed in the game to feel that we were captains of a merchant or pirate ship. Move take a port action, move take a port action, move maybe battle, move take a port action...

(I don't want to get in an argument about the merits of Merchants and Marauders...please read on for the question I am asking)

I admit that I am not an Ameritrasher, nor an Ameritrasher's son...

So this got me thinking about theme and why the idea of theme is claimed by Ameritrashers alone...

(I don't want to get in an argument about Ameritrash versus Euro...each have their merits and faults...please read on for the question I am asking)

One of the best themed games I have played is World Without End. A Euro! While it is not my favourite game, I really felt like I was trying to survive. Paying my dues to the church, trying to build to get resources, trying to stave off the plague...the game gives you that feeling of survival and even depression when events pile against your plans...so...

WHAT IS THE BEST THEMED EURO YOU HAVE PLAYED?

I've recently been trying Tammany Hall on slothninja's site and the theme holds up extremely well - controlling the various neighborhoods and their resident immigrants backing in old-time NYC.

I think the best themes for euros is one where you would be struggling for resources and survival. So Agricola works well as a Euro. Many games these days take only some Euro elements and I'm not sure the classification means much now for describing a particular game. Most are hybrids.

Navegador.

Nothing in the gameplay of most Euros conveys a lot of theme for me, but the look/feel of Navegador provides the most theme of any Euro I've played.

Thebes - Spend time moving around on the map, trying to dig valuable artifacts up, figuratively and literally.

Fresco - Nobody likes waking up early to get the color paint that they need to finish painting their fresco ;) - IMO, everything in this game works together very well from a thematic perspective.

Magnum Sal is a very nice Euro with a well-integrated (and unique!) theme.

Florenza and Vinhos also come to mind.

Even Dominant Species has a ton of theme (though the main playing area is highly abstract).

EDIT: Gah! How could I forget Bootleggers!

I personally like Agricola's theme...

Also played Dungeon Petz last night for the first time and it has a neat and funny theme.

Quo Vadis? would possibly be my pick. I generally feel as though I'm lying and bargaining (but mostly lying) my way up the ranks of a political system.

It depends on what you consider a euro I suppose. Is A Few Acres of Snow ok? How about War of the Ring then?

For something we can pretty much unanimously agree is a euro, my pick goes with Tikal.

Euros are harped on about their "lack of theme" because the medieval castle building and Renaissance trading themes there were used by earlier Euros have been re-hashed so many times.

I mean, "shuffle this deck to draw monster cards" isn't thematic, either.

I do think that A Few Acres of Snow incorporates it's theme quite well. The brief author's notes and the historical essay in the rulebook helps.
