Jim has floated an idea on CSW where the Prof check is eliminated and a unit's Proficiency is instead added to the fire roll, and has asked for feedback.

Surely this has got to reduce the RANGE of possible results.

For example, if a US full-strength squad Op Fires at a non-adjacent 1st-line German unit in a Stone Building (+2 Building, -1 Moving) and rolls a '1', the unit is casualty reduced. But if you add the Proficiency of the US unit to the roll, the best you can get is 'Suppressed'.

So current rules:

No result but unit can try Op Fire again later: 20%
No result and unit has spent Op Fire: 40%
Enemy Suppressed: 32 %
Enemy Casualty Reduced: 8%

Proposed Change:

No result and unit has spent Op Fire: 70%
Enemy Suppressed: 30%

You are correct, Jim has crunched a lot of data on a number of situations, including the one you have described.

My apologies, gentlemen, I never considered looking on the Variant forum for a change to the game proposed by the designer.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Well, that is all it is at the moment. The game works as is. The new rule is just am experiment.

I like the game as is and both the idea and mechanics/implementation of a proficiency roll. A lot in fact. Just my $0.02 after nearly 40 years of grognardishness.
