As has been noted, the recent release of 1830 contained several unfortunate errors. Though not significantly affecting gameplay, these are not acceptable errors to a release that is designed to be the definitive version of a classic game, and Mayfair has been working to find a solution that will address these problems as effectively as possible.

As a side note, Mayfair has a commitment (and strong historical precedence) to both improving our processes to not make these mistakes again (whether they be internal or external), and fixing mistakes as best as possible to the satisfaction of the consumer. Fixes are not trivial—we have larger print runs than many other manufacturers, we have partners to coordinate changes with, and other products to work on concurrently. But, when a problem exists in one of our games, we will do our best to fix it to the community’s satisfaction.

Mayfair will be producing a tile sheet with corrected versions of all tiles in error. This newly-revised tile sheet is currently available in PDF form here. Any future information will be noted here and on the 1830 errata page of our website. These will be sent free of charge to any owner of a Mayfair edition of 1830. We will provide an e-mail address for owners to send their address to once the sheets are available. There are already tiles that correct the board issues, and the errata rules sheet spells out how to use those tiles for gameplay.

Our international licensees will also have copies of this tile sheet made available to them, and if you currently have a copy of 1830 from another publisher, contact them to find out their distribution policy. Note that the Dutch and Italian versions of 1830 are currently being assembled, and will ship with the errata tile sheet already included. Furthermore, all current copies of 1830 that remain in our warehouse will be opened, have the errata tile sheet and rules included, and reassembled. Future purchasers of 1830 may find their tile sheet already included in the box (but if not, the above applies).

We truly regret these errors, and hope that this will demonstrate our commitment to 1830 and our future support of the 18xx line of games. Should you have any questions, I’ll compile them as they appear and provide answers as best I can.

Good to hear Alex, and I hope as much as possible that can readily be amended (rather than just the tiles) will be included in the patch. Stickers to apply to company charters/cards, and the board, would be most welcome (eg. A House Divided). A lot of us do not have easy access to the equipment to properly be able to use the pdfs available on-line.

Alex -

you're still missing the hint that tiles oo13 and oo14 are not playable under normal conditions. You need to switch on the "flexible exits" option of variant V.7-8 to have them in the mix. Therefore, those tiles should also not have the (G) letter on the back side, as this scenario is not ment to be played with this "flexible exits" option.

Cheers

Hanno

Alex,

Thank you for this update, and for the decision to provide corrected tiles. I think Mayfair are doing the right thing.

If it's not too late, I would urge you to contact the people who maintain the 18xx tile reference sites (John David Galt and Keith Thomasson) and agree "old-style" tile numbers for your oo1, oo13 and oo14 tiles, rather than leaving them blank on the revised tile sheet. 18xx people will play the new 1830+ by mail and e-mail, using the resources they have already put together for the old 1830, so having the tile numbers agreed in advance will simplify this process for your customers.

This is the normal process for choosing new tile numbers in the 18xx community, when the game designer contacts the people who maintain the reference information. I think it shouldn't take much effort to agree numbers for these tiles.

Best wishes,

Dave.

I don't even own the game but have had my eye on it over the past year. This sort of customer service makes me want to purchase the game. Adding it to my wishlist for future consideration.

Reminds me of the time when I was sent replacement wooden cubes for my Tigris & Euphrates Deluxe Edition.

Good job, Mayfair!

Having the fixes to the board in sticker form would be notably superior to the tiles. Having to place tiles every time, including remembering where they go etc., would be moderately annoying.

Agreed. If they could give high resolution PDFs I can print my own stickers. But, Mayfair provided stickers to fix the board would be much preferred.

I got a copy of 1830 over the holidays. Should I hold off on learning/teaching the game until the corrected pieces/stickers are available?

No.. you should learn and play the classic games and do the following:

1. Use the "classic" graphics side of the spider tiles. the brown with 6 connections, I think it is the 63 tile.

3. Use a sharpie and write $80 on the Detroit hex. (http://www.18xx.net/1830/1830m.gif)

You also need to remove $40 from Ottawa and add $80 to Detroit for terrain costs.

Why not make the charters available as downloadable hires pdf files, so we can print and laminate them to correct the charters with errors?

Hi Alex.

That's very nice of you and your company to post that out and to take care of your customers like that.

I am quite new to the 18xx world and as such do not have a solid grasp of how these errors you describe would affect my gameplay. But anyway I am interested in getting these corrections, and BTW I would also prefer stickers to tiles.

My question may sound a bit silly but here goes. I just purchased my 1830 copy less than a week ago so I am quite sure I do not have the corrected tiles and errata sheet. What must I do once you have printed those to prove that I have bought the game? Is there a serial number or proof of purchase of some kind, or do you just send your package to whoever asks for it? After all it wouldn't be very useful to order that when you don't even have the game!

Thanks!

Jean

I too appreciate this gesture. When should we email you our address? I noticed on the 1830 Errata page on the Mayfair website that an email address is given to contact for the new tile sheet.

Does this mean we should begin contacting you, or should we wait for further word in this thread or forum?

I don't think that the replacement tiles are ready yet.

The info page listing the email address is there since December.

The tile sheets are not ready yet. The e-mail exists (it's the usual custserv@mayfairgames.com), but no time frame for delivery has been established yet, and we will have a protocol for the e-mail (subject tag, etc.) that has yet to be established. I *will* post here when the tiles are ready to be sent out.

Other notes: as I understand it, the final tile sheet reflects Hanno's notes above. I have passed along the charter idea (posting images to the website).
