Ashcan Pete was having a bad day. He was just seeking shelter from the rain in a seemingly abandoned mansion when three strangers recruited him to help them search the house. It started getting weird when a snake slithered across his hand while he was fumbling with a puzzle box. Then, he couldn't make out his own reflection in any mirrors. Things only got worse from there.

He had become convinced that the strangers he had met outside this decrepit mansion were not as human as they first appeared and just being around them was making life tough for him. Trying to get some distance from that "private detective" that seemed to be following him, Pete rushed to enter the other room. He jumped back as he grabbed the knob. He could have sworn he had just felt a heart beat. Shaking these thoughts from his mind, he pressed on into the master bedroom. The "detective" rushed into the room after him. Clearly, he was trying to keep an eye on Pete, waiting for his moment to strike. Pete went to open the closet and hide inside. There it was again! The heart beat in the door knob. Desperate to get away from the demon that was following him, he went in anyway. Pete sat quietly in the closet, hoping the demon would leave. However, in his fragile state, he was not able to handle the confined quarters and it felt as if the walls were closing in on him. He felt an uncontrollable urge to leave the safety of the closet and rushed back out, ignoring the heartbeat of the doorknob. But there he was! The demon, just standing there waiting for him. Pete began to think there was no way he was going to get out of this. Deciding things were better in the closet, he went back to hide.

Pete turned to the only thing he could think of in this time of desperation, his guitar. Pete began to play in an attempt to calm his nerves. Unbeknownst to Pete, Walter Lynch, proprietor of the mansion, was nearing the completion of a very dark, very gruesome ritual in a distant corner of the house. Driven mad by some other-worldly force, Walter had collected tissue samples from one of the strangers Pete entered the house with. In his psychosis, however, as Walter heard the sounds of the guitar he became too distracted to complete the ritual, feeling compelled to go deal with the intruder but not being allowed to leave by the dark forces in control. Pete played for a good hour as Walter sat paralyzed with rage, unable to bring this dark plan to fruition.

Eventually, the claustrophobia got the better of Pete and he felt another urge to leave the closet, even stronger than before. Pete put the guitar on his back and began to slowly open the closet door. The "detective" was gone. Or, at least, Pete thought he was. The room had gone pitch black.

Down in the basement, with the infernal music finally stopped, Walter completes his ritual...

As Pete makes his way through the darkened bedroom, two bright red eyes move out from behind the wardrobe. Pete, in a fit of panic, sprints towards the door. Gah! The warmth and pulse of the door are undeniable this time. This house is alive! Pete throws the door open and rushes out into the hall. Pete stops dead in his tracks. The "detective" is out in the hall, rummaging through some drawers. As Pete tries to contemplate how to get around the demon, he notices something. A long, slimy tail pokes out from under the detective's trench coat. "I knew it," Pete shouts as he charges the "detective". Pete takes his guitar and savagely beats the "detective" with it, leaving the demon with a broken arm and likely concussed. The injured "detective" manages to crawl out into the grand entrance of the mansion. Pete leaves the shattered remains of his trusty guitar behind and decides that now, with the demon wounded, is his best chance to escape.

Pete burst through the door but as he looked around the foyer his heart sank. Not only was the injured demon there, but the other two were as well. The "professor" and the "scientist". The three of them glared at him. Next to the "scientist" lay the brutalized remains of some other hapless victim, this one covered in mud and looking as if it had been dead for weeks. He was not sure what strange powers these demons had but he knew he could not fight off three of them with his bare hands. The demons were shouting something about needing to get to him to the basement. Not wanting to find out what cruel fate awaited him beneath the house, Pete lunged at the "detective" and grabbed one of the .45s he had holstered. Pete placed the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger.

Harvey, Joe and Kate were horrified by what they had just seen. They hadn't known "Ashcan" very long but the man had just committed suicide right in front of them. This only strengthened their resolve, however, that whatever evils were in this mansion must be stopped. A moment later the door at the far end of the foyer exploded open, ripping off its hinges. A large gelatinous mass covered in tentacles and eyes rolled through the new hole in the wall. As they gazed upon this monstrosity, their collective will sank as they believed a gruesome death inevitable. Nevertheless, they prepared to fight. Just then, the old grandfather clock chimed twice and the house began to rumble. Rafters began to fall and walls began to crack. the three investigators looked at eachother and, in silent agreement, sprinted for the door. Just as they were barely down the front steps, the house collapsed and a giant hole opened underneath. An other-worldly scream echoed out as the monstrosity was no doubt crushed under the tons of rubble and earth. Whatever grim fate this evil had in store for the world, it had been averted...for now.
