I lucked into trading for a copy of Eclipse which is on the way (haven't played it yet). Have any of you played Space Empires as well as Eclipse? I'm trying to decide whether to purchase this as well.

I own both. Space Empires is probably my second favourite game of 2011 after Dominant Species.

SE is a hex-and-counter wargame. It tends to run quite long (2p game 3ish hours, I've had a 4p game last nearly 8 BUT IT WAS AWESOME).

Eclipse is a good game, from what I can tell after 4 plays. I'm not sure it's the best game in all of history but I can see why Eurogamers might think it is: it adds combat, chrome and excitement to what is essentially a euro economic optimisation game. For those of us already have tastes that run more towards the "combat and chrome" the fuss over Eclipse seems a little OTT

Anyway:
SE4X: Very much focused on the war aspect, takes a while, "wargame" flavoured. Medium weight, good with 2-4 players.
Eclipse: A neat Euro structure with cool tech and spaceships rather than wheat and carrots. Medium-heavy, good with 3-6 players, not so hot with 2 (imo).

Both very good but very different from each other.

Have to agree with Fwing - nice summary. Not sure Eclipse is all it is hyped to be, either, but it is fun enough for about 3 hours.

This is exactly the right length for a review! I wish more reviews were like this (instead, of course, like high school, there seems to be a minimum length requirement).
