Poll

Like many wargamers, I often buy the next game in a series that I like in order to avoid that - "oops that game went out of print and now I want it" moment most of us have experienced at some point in time. I found that I really liked certain things about The Gamers/ MMP's Tactical, Standard and Operational Combat Series games. So I bought new games in the series as they came out and went back and added older ones, until I had completed my collection. Unfortunately, this has left me with too many un-played games and not enough shelf space for other new and exciting games.

This is where you, my friend. can help me. I've created a poll so you can tell me which of these games I should keep (you need this one in your collection), sell/trade (this one wasn't one of my favorites), I might play it again or I might sell / trade it (not a definite keeper, but it was OK).

Please feel free to add a comment or list your 2 or 3 favorites in the system. Thanks!

I guess I hadn't considered that aspect of the poll - leave it to my fellow wargamers!

I'd ditch TCS, and keep all SCS and OCS. I never could see the fun with Op Sheets.

I think you'll see some simplification of Op Sheets in the future.

In my opinion, TCS is the best WWII Tactical Game system out there. No other game feels as close to WWII battles I read about in history books. One of the best wargaming experiences for me every time.

At the moment, the poll numbers sure seem to be bearing out that sentiment.

And I agree with you completely.

You're better off building more shelves or moving to a bigger house.

I concur. I think its a great system and the op sheets are my fav part too. It's just that my enthusiasm typically starts to wane right around the 10,000th die roll.

No terrible realistic or fair, but I've been considering using the fire roll for the morale roll as well, that halves the rolls required for one fire combat.

Gah. Keep them all. All three of these are my favorite series of games but I have had a far harder time finding early TCS games at prices I can afford. I'd dearly love to find Bloody 110th or Operation: Schmidt or Screaming Eagles or even the three GD games but I said to keep them in your poll. Good luck with what you decide, but as the fellow above me said, it's rather like asking which Ferrari you should sell.

But if you decide you want to get rid of Bloody 110th, please keep me in mind whistle

I'm kinda lukewarm on SCS. They're good solid games and all,
but overall not terribly different from other systems portraying
the same actions.

B110 and Omaha--I'd keep for rarity and $ value, but that's my backward thinking.

GD'40--playable, I think it's an interesting situation.

AFH--perhaps the most underrated of the series, mostly because the game-specific rules are a mess. Cleaned up, it's a game with a lot of maneuver and very interesting terrain (nearly everything that's not Partially Protective is Billiard Table!).

I am your antithesis. Keep TCS, ditch the rest. The Op Sheets give you gaming's best current command and control system.

And yes, I have mostly followed my own advice - only Afrika, Tunisia and DAK2 left from SCS / OCS.

yet Ethan even with your best efforts the grognard wheel grinds slow. Those
rules revs have been languishing for yrs....my mint copy will expire b4 they are ever done!!

which is a huge pity.

Good to hear A Frozen Hell is playable. All the comments on consimworld asking about rules clarification scared me away. Now it's back on my "To play" list. :)

So far, I've received 75 answers - thanks to all of you who have voted / commented. The results are very interesting to me.

For the TCS, only 1 game has had greater than 50% votes for Keep It! - and that's the latest in the series GD '42. Not sure if that is because it is truly better than the others, or maybe plays best with the most current rules (v 4.0). Or is it possibly more exposure than the earliest games in the series? And less than 1 in 4 of you would keep Matanikau: Battles on the Matanikau River, Guadalcanal, 1942, Hunters from the Sky or Black Wednesday: The Battle of Krasni Bor, 10-11 Feb 1943,.

The SCS on the other hand gets a bit more love from you grognards, with 6 of 14 titles getting a "Keep It!" rating. The two titles with the most support (75%) are Stalingrad Pocket II and Afrika (second edition). And circling the drain in this series are Guadalajara, Crusader, Karelia '44 and Gazala. Although the results for Karelia '44 maybe disprove my cult of the new thoughts about the TCS.

And finally we come to the OCS, which gets all the love! Only the first two games in the series don't have a Keep It! rating (Guderian's Blitzkrieg and Enemy at the Gates). I assume part of it is due to the substantial reworking of the first in Guderian's Blitzkrieg II and the incorporation of the second into Case Blue. The majority of the titles have 75% "Keep It!" ratings and two of the titles (Korea: The Forgotten War and DAK2) have almost 90% "Keep It!" responses.

Thanks again for all of the responses!
