But that has more focus on the fighting. Something that has multiple paths to improve yourself (ie tech trees/ civ-building concepts), but in which the fighting remains the central component.

Also, looking for something not too long (3hrs and under), and ideally not space-themed. Any suggestions?

7 Ages _MAY_ be of interested to you - it is fighting heavy, but also rules heavy and takes AGES to play

I've always found that an aggressive strategy guarantees plenty of fighting in Antike - a two player game, with two civilisations each, has especially constant cut and thrust. Otherwise, for an under three hour game with constant fighting but a wide variety of approaches to scoring, we usually go for Smallworld. And what about Warfrog's Lords of Creation? Only one simple path to improvement but when and how to use it is absolutely crucial, and non-stop fighting for the first 2/3 of the game.

Imperial and Imperial 2030 have a lot of fighting and use a similar rondel mechanism as Antike (same designer).

Mare Nostrum has a similar setting as Antike, with multiple paths to victory.

Conquest of Paradise has exploration, civ-building, and fighting in an unusual setting.

Are you looking to stay in the purely historic theme/context?Eclipse is all the rage, but with the sci-fi theme (it's also more complex than Antike).

Others (although I have no experience with them) for consideration:
Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery
Struggle of Empires
Shogun

Thanks for all the suggestions! I have Cyclades, but it doesn't have tech tree/power-up mechanics. Imperial is more of a stock game than a war game (at least if you like to win!)

Mare Nostrum looks to be pretty awesome, now all I need is to find a copy! Conquest of Paradise looks really interesting too.
