Hi, thanks to the Magdeburg trilogy by Alan Altieri and the musket and pikes game series, I've become very interested in the Thirty years war but while my library is ok for general history for the period it's totally lacking in the military history part for this war.

Can you suggest me some good military history books on this conflict?

William Guthrie's two volume "Battles of the Thirty Years' War: From White Mountain to Nordlingen, 1618-1635" and "The Later Thirty Years War: From the Battle of Wittstock to the Treaty of Westphalia"

David Parrott "Richelieu's Army: War, Government and Society in France, 1624-1642 (Cambridge Studies in Early Modern History)" has some good stuff.

Be warned these are expensive, you'll want to get them from a library

These are available in Kindle editions, but not at typical Kindle prices.

Geoff Mortimer's 'Eyewitness Accounts of the Thirty Years War 1618-48' contains some interesting first hand accounts by soldiers, although the book is not exclusively military accounts.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eyewitness-Accounts-Thirty-Years-161...

You may also want to check out 'Wallenstein: The Enigma of the Thirty Years War' by the same author.

The 'The Thirty Years' War 1618-1648' by Richard Bonney, which is part of the Osprey Essential Histories series, is a pretty good introduction to the war.

There are also four Osprey Men-at-Arms series books on the Thirty Years War:

Finally, 'Pike and Shot Tactics 1590-1660' by Keith Roberts is a useful general book on the tactics of the period.

Edit: extra books added.

I just picked this one up over the holidays at Barnes & Nobles for $20. I also had been looking for a good history of this period as Thirty Years War: Europe in Agony, 1618-1648 and the science fiction 1632 series by Eric Flint spiked my interest in this period. So far this has been a good interesting read, though I am very early into it.

This is what I have long been looking for! Thanks for suggestions.

I don't like the recommendations for "Europe's Tragedy" and C.V. Wedgwood's book. I haven't read the former, but it is easy to find and not really the kind of recommendation that I think anyone would actually ask about. The Wedgwood book I did read and I didn't like its style or what it was going for. I would like to read biased accounts from both perspectives, but not a biased account against our past. Better to understand the way of thinking then than to be self righteous and condemn it.

As for military strategy, I found more facts in the M&P campaign guides than in any broad history of the period. These types are almost all that's normally available, so something in-depth or translated into English would be great.
