Read the first poll option carefully! It's saying that there are no World War II or ACW wargames around at all. (That date is 1860.)

Poll
Complete the following sentence by checking the appropriate boxes below. (For purposes of this quiz, imagine that you cannot design new games or expect anyone else to design any; you're stuck with what exists.)

"I would NOT be a wargamer if . . ."
there were no modern-era (1860 to present day) games.
there were no land-warfare games.
there were no history-based games.
I could only play wargames solitaire.
I could be a world-class chess or go player instead.
giving up the hobby would make my wildest dreams come true.

I wonder if the first choice is being misread. WW2 and ACW games are so popular that I'm surprised to see that only one gamer would quit the hobby if they didn't exist.

FWIW, I checked only the last two boxes myself. I'm flexible on all the rest.

I feel that If there were no modern era games I would be happy playing Alexander, Roman empire, Mongolian, china, Japan and Napoleonics, and I would most likely be happy. Because what is available would be the best.
What I don't get is what this poll will tell us???
Seems pointless so, I didn't even vote, because my answer isn't even there.

Together or separately? (Seems like one might distract from the other unless you're very good at multitasking.)

It will tell us what's so important to the people polled that they'd give up wargaming rather than do without it.

Apparently only half the people polled would give up wargaming if they were stuck playing only non-historical games (sci-fi, fantasy, and such).

Mostly, though, it's just for fun and conversation.

Where this came from, actually, is that I was browsing posts and noticed two or three from people who said they'd be happy if wargames only covered WW2 and the ACW. So I wondered how many others shared that view. But, being a negative kind of guy, I turned it around and asked how many people would quit wargaming without WW2 and ACW games. And then I got carried away and started wondering about other stuff, so I lumped it all together. After all, I don't want to go around starting a bunch of silly polls.

Amusingly, someone started a poll on "does patrick caroll ask too many polls":

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/749531/poll-does-patrick-car...

However, the BGG wargame sub domain moderator locked the whole thread in the blink of an eye.

I met a beautiful English teacher a few years ago who could have persuaded me to give it up but l suspect l would have crept back into the hobby while she wasn't looking. Fate and the fact she was way out of my league means l will never know...

Not really in the blink of an eye, it was up for about an hour.
It's just that there are always a few people who can't take a friendly ribbing, as well as a few axgrinders. They use the Red-X shamelessly.
So what else is new.

Why would anyone in their right mind feel shame about using a tool that's been provided for the express purpose of making their experience more enjoyable and to further the interests of the community as a whole?

What an odd thing to say.

Exchange "shamelessly" with "not what it was intended for".

Dunno. I remember some maxim 'bout not tattling.

Maybe it's 'cause I was brought up Italian.

And more respondents would give it up for lack of history than to make their dreams come true. That's some kind of living in the past!
