Board wargaming is the hobby of those who call themselves board wargamers. It's just one facet of a hobby for those who call themselves wargamers.

Board wargaming is to wargaming as collecting European stamps is to stamp collecting.

Wow, all the previous arguments in the sub-domain seemed to center around, "is it or isn't it a wargame?"

Now it seems to be coming down to this: "Does wargaming even exist?"

Now I'm wondering, "What the hell have I been doing for the past 50 years?"

Should I post a poll to find out just what I have been doing these past 50 years?

Nah, I don't think I really want to know.

Instead, these polls:
Is there any hobby with more angst than wargaming?
Is there any hobby with more soul searching than wargaming?
Is it really a wargame, ‘cause my Spell Check says its war game.
If Spell Check doesn’t recognize wargames, do they really exist?
Do I really exist, ‘cause Spell Check doesn’t like my last name either.

(I could have posted this in any one of three different threads but I chose this one)

Suddenly, this article I read a few days ago gains much relevance:

That's like saying American Football is one facet of those
who play Football.

It's an amusement, divertissement, leisure activity or thingy. It might also be part of an autonomous collective but I'm never quite sure of that.

Nahhh, It's a hobby.

I believe this is closer to my reality:

Board wargaming is the hobby of those who call themselves board wargamers. It's just one facet of a hobby for those who call themselves boardgamers.

My interest in wargames stems from my interest in boardgames. If board wargames did not exist, I would play more boardgames, my interest in other types of wargames (miniatures / computer / role playing / live action) would probably not increase.

I'm sorry master Jedi, but if an item doesn't appear in our spellcheck archives, than it does not exist.

Likely the same case here. I was very into board games
(including very light war-themed games like Skirmish)
before I ever met a real wargame. I'm just not sure I would
ever have had the energy to get into minis full force.

You're right, Patrick, this forum is all about the seriousness of wargaming and philosophy behind it. I should keep a straight face. If so much as a smirk appears from having fun, please slap me, and put me in my place.
