Wanted to see what everyone's favorite game is based around a certain theme, like Space, Horror, Pirate, Fantasy ect. and what game has stuck with you and your gaming group for a while as opposed to those released over the last few years !

Heroscape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie, so much theme that it's not even considered a board game.

This is an easy one:

Advanced Civilization

This can be my only choice, however for a 2nd choice I would pick

Up Front

Both of these games are full of their theme which to anyone who has played them knows.

For a recent game, I'd say that Tannhäuser stays in my collection just because of the great World War I Eldritch Horror theme mash-up - it really appeals to me.

For a game that has been around awhile, I'd pick Space Hulk as a thematic game that I've enjoyed for many years.

A recent game that I have yet to play is Horus Heresy (2010). I'm hoping this game is just just bursting with theme when I finally get around to playing it (and if it is, it will certainly be my favorite).

Happy thematic gaming all!

The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way Where many paths and errands meet.

Probably Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game or Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game.

Without a doubt Battlestar Galactica.

Stress, paranoia - exactly the same feelings as watching the TV series.

Plus you get to insult your friends using an acceptable f-word.

I'd say that BSG has the best longevityh in our group; I can'te recall a week that it hasn't been played over the last year or so. I haven't played it, but it appears to be very rich in its theme, which is a great part of its appeal.

Regarding games with deep theme flavor, two of my favorite games don't see the game tables in our group very often.

Princes of the Rennaissance

Industrial Waste

Setting is not theme!

Example: Lord of the rings

Setting: High fantasy world
Themes: Friendship, Courage, Loss, Corruption, etc

Zombie theme:
+1 Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game

For Mob/Gangster theme:
Mob Ties: The Board Game

Theme? Apocalyptic evil? Etc:
Chaos in the Old World

Unfortunately highly thematic games are synonymous with crap games full of too many mechanics and rules that ruin them for me. Not with the above examples.

Note theme is used in a far looser way in the context of boardgames than in literary criticism.

For me, it would be a toss up between Android, Carpe Astra and Tales of the Arabian Nights.

I love the "Bladerunner" feel of Android and wish I could play it more often.

Carpe Astra, to me, really feels like a political back-stabbing battle for control of the galaxy. The text on the cards really ties it all together.

Tales of the Arabian Nights is just a wonderful storytelling game. I get immersed in the grand adventures that both I and the other players have. I even got to experience a rare death of a character in the game (my wife, not me)!

If you look at game design defintions theme isn't there, Genre is

Genre: A game's classification or type as broken down into two broad subcategories: turn type (real-time, turn-based, pause-and-effect, etc.) and category (action, strategy, sports, shooter, role-playing, casino, etc.).

You will seem theme under game mechanics as either abstract, i.e. chess or as simulating something i.e. monopoly

You could probably apply movie genres/subgenres to capture some of the classifications of board games

Science Fiction
Fantasy
Horrow
Action
War
Western
Crime
Thriller

etc

Nothing comes close to beating BattleTech for setting (space with mecha) and theme (man vs. man). The BT universe makes the game come alive.

I enjoy historical themes, like Colosseum and Vikings, and many of the games I meet have a certain historic theme to it. Though, the more ancient the history, the better it is. I am kind of a history buff. If you look at my collection you`ll see I have quite a few games with historic theme.
