I have read about Eclipse and Space Empires: 4X, they seem interesting. However they also seem very heavy and long. Which is shorter/easier to teach?

Is there a shorter 4x game?

I traded Ascending Empires, I disliked the board.

Curious about Empires of the Void.

Any other thoughts?

I've heard that Galactic Emperor is pretty good. It's been recommended to me a few times.

It is pretty good and can be finished quicker then most of the other listed games. I'd say overall it's okay for the time period given.

Space Empires can be around 2 hours if you only play with 2 players. Add an hour or two per additional player though.

I've heard Eclipse lasts up to three or four hours (might as well play Twilight Imperium, granted I haven't played 8 player, but most of my 3-4 player games lasts under 3 hours, so shorter then some of the times I've heard for Eclipse).

If you don't mind card games Race for the Galaxy and Eminent Domain can be played in less then an hour, and definately less then 2 hours...though more of build up your empire than a 4x game.

How many players will you have? You can get a 4-player game of Eclipse in under 2 hours if everyone is paying attention. Also, the game's fairly easy to teach. I've taught it four times with great results. A big benefit is that the gameplay is so smooth and streamlined that remembering the rules is a piece of cake.

Does anyone know anything about how Supernova compares with these games?

I own the game but haven't played it yet.

Yeah, but does it feel like exploration? I played once and it was ok... T

If you don't like RftG, though I really enjoy Eminent Domain, I probably wouldn't suggest it to you.

I guess Galactic Emperor or Eclipse or Space Empires then.

Other options

Ad Astra
Alien Frontiers
Core Worlds (Maybe)
Free Trader(I believe this is free print and play if I recall right)
Smugglers of the Galaxy

And then the following can be longer or shorter depending on how much you play for...etc, and if you don't get unlucky with components is actually a pretty good game.

Star Trek: Fleet Captains

One other game though some would call it very dry (but then people also call Hansa Teutonica dry) would be Supernova

but that's a pretty big iffy maybe. I've enjoyed it, doesn't mean others will. It had some hype a while back, but that's mostly disappeared now, still a good game.

It isn't like SE-IV, but it does have a little of the explore/research elements that are in the typical 4X games.

Skip Galactic Emperor for Eclipse. Eclipse appears to be half an hour per player with average AP players. Galactic Emperor is not much shorter, maybe 7 minutes less per player.

Agreed. The session reports of longer games for Eclipse have more to do with the fact that it's a new game than anything else imo...

After a handful of plays, players should be able to finish in 30-45 minutes/player...

Ok. 30 minutes per player is fine. Now to wait for the reprint. Todd
