What's your favourite specialist to use in CtA games?

I lack the Scottish Wars and later FFG specialist packs, but out of what I do own, I love the Dwarven axes. Being able to hit on a bonus strike, then getting to roll again for a banner colour or flag is awesome. Makes my little dwarves pretty fierce seeming.

Matt,

One I know I don't like to see my opponent take is Bow Upgrade - that will tend to make me make my next choice thought over again.

A few of my top choices are King's Allies, Vantage Point, and Illusionary Troops depending on my war council.

While the specialist card feature of Call to Arms seems a half-measure on the way to race specific CtA decks, I do enjoy playing a random version of CtA using specialists. Units like the axe swingers certainly spice up the game. In general I think the game has done a good job of keeping unit powers in check, while still making them quite interesting.

Take the goblin ostrich riders beside the ogres - quite a range, fun to watch them interact on the battlefield.

My favorite specialist unit would be the Hobgoblin Spear Bearers...embedded with a drummer devil

Yeah, I like them too. I really enjoy (and have had great luck) with the Ostrich Riders too.

I've only used Ostrich Riders once and had my butt handed to me. I feel I used them wrong, though, and didn't use their dynamic ability very well. Could have been because the map was dominated by rivers so I couldn't move them around that much . . .

I really liked the distinct army-types that Days of Wonder was building towards with the Humans, Goblins, and Dwarves. The fleet hit-and-run tactics of the Goblins, the stout but slow Dwarves, and the adaptable humans as a middle ground. FFG kinda went away from that with their additions to the three, but more or less those elements exist.

Taking the Ostrich riders over the mounted knights (or even the hyenas, with the same specialist card) isn't the way to go if assured victory is ones end, but they are fun units to use on the board, especially in conjunction with the slingers, and having the red banner-ed spear bearers and ogres behind for muscle...
