This is a follow-up to the poll about the costs of wargaming (see this thread.).

The more you invest, the more games you will have.

One limiting factor is storage space, another is revenue (if you are only into collecting, time to play is not an issue. devil).

Wargamer, what total number of games do you believe you will eventually have owned ?

EDIT: Indeed, the question is about board wargames. You can include miniature wargame rules if you want (arbitrarily, I will say that one rulebook = one game, whatever the epochs covered), but this poll definitely does exclude electronic wargames.

These three polls are interrelated:

Poll
1. How many war games do you believe you will have owned in your lifetime ?
Between 1 and 8 wargames.
Between 9 and 16 wargames.
Between 17 and 32 wargames.
Between 33 and 64 wargames.
Between 65 and 128 wargames.
Between 129 and 256 wargames.
Between 257 and 512 wargames.
Between 513 and 1024 wargames.
Between 1024 and 2048 wargames.
More then 2049 wargames.
2. How many war games do you own presently ?
Between 1 and 8 wargames.
Between 9 and 16 wargames.
Between 17 and 32 wargames.
Between 33 and 64 wargames.
Between 65 and 128 wargames.
Between 129 and 256 wargames.
Between 257 and 512 wargames.
Between 513 and 1024 wargames.
Between 1024 and 2048 wargames.
More then 2049 wargames.
3. What is your annual income ?
Between zero and 999 dollars a year.
Between 1000 and 8 000 dollars a year.
Between 9 000 and 16 000 dollars a year.
Between 17 000 and 32 000 dollars a year.
Between 33 000 and 64 000 dollars a year.
Between 65 000 and 128 000 dollars a year.
Between 129 000 and 256 000 dollars a year.
Between 257 000 and 512 000 dollars a year.
More then 513 000 dollars a year.

In the previous poll on the actual and predicted direct costs of wargaming, the majority would be ready to invest between 1000 and 10 000 dollars into wargaming.

This should give us approximately between 20 and 200 games.

But at least a third were ready to invest between 10 000 and 100 000 dollars.

You could also try German Marks from 1923 under the Weimar Republic.

Is there an easy way to filter my collection list here at BGG to show only wargames? I just estimated.

You can, but it's backwards. Go to "Advanced Search," click on the button that says just to search games you own, and filter "wargame" subdomain.

Of course, that lists games BGG thinks are wargames. Your mileage may vary...

Download WhattoPlay and you'll find it very helpful not only in determining how many wargames you have but also how many remain unplayed whistle

I don't get paid in dollars so I guess my answer to the earnings question is the first option?

This poll was a little bit confusing to me because it did not specify cardboard wargames, as opposed to cardboard plus miniatures plus computer wargames. But I assumed that cardboard wargames was what was meant and so I did not include miniatures rules and collections or computer wargames. Including those would have boosted my categories by one each.

But I'm going to try to trim down my personal cardboard wargame collection to the 9 to 16 range by selling off more than a dozen of the collectibles that I have. Don't really need to own a lot of the cardboard games that I play because other local players have big collections. Will keep the miniatures collections down to the 9 to 16 range as well...

As long as you are not getting paid in Drachmae, I would say you are doing fine.

I own a shade over 600 titles, and it took me 45+ years to accumulate them. I doubt if I'll break the 1000 game threshold in my lifetime, unless I somehow become independently wealthy - don't see that happening in the next 20-40 years.whistle

Be a real wargamer, and round up or down towards the closest category. If evenly split, then break the tie with a friendly die roll ! Dismissed !

I tend to build my games rather than buy them, mostly because the games I play are decades out of print (and because I love drawing maps). When I am finished with the Decade of S&T, my collection should be about 100 games larger, I guess.

I do buy games, sometimes, though I've been pretty disappointed with the new games I've bought. There also comes a point when I've got too many games I've never played. So I figure I'll top out at around 300.

I always have difficulty answering this question. How does one classify games in a system? For example:

A. GMT's BoAR - Brandywine, Guilford, Saratoga, Savannah, Monmouth

Are these 5 games or one with 5-6 scenarios? I tend to lean on the side of 5 games because I paid for 5 games.

B. GMT's Combat Commander - Are these 4 games (Europe, Med, Resistance, Pacific), 2 games (Europe & Pacific) or just 1 with a ton scenarios? I paid for 4, but here for some reason I tend to lean on the side of 2 games.

So fellow wargamers, how do you calculate your collection?

I think I'll eventually get down to 200 or less titles, not counting expansions and scenario packs.

I recommend: One box = one game.

Fine for rough numbers, but something like The Art of Siege,
with multiple different systems, really ain't one game.

If it's playable standalone I count it as one game.
If it's a ruleset sold on it's own (e.g. ASL) I count it as one game.
The rest I count as expansions.
