Well I've decided to pass on the reigns to someone who is a self-described "relative newbie" but what better way to push him into the community than throwing him right out front? Of course, even in just one year on the Geek he has already become a helpful voice to Thunderstone fans, answering questions and helping people get more out of the game. Ladies and Gentlemen, Luds!

Quote:
Hi everyone, my name is Ludovic, everyone calls me Luds. I'm extremely honoured to be the Geek of the Week.

I've discovered this wonderful community late last year, thanks to my buddy Gordon (blurr). I've been a fan of gaming since childhood, playing the likes of Boardwalk, Clue, and multiple games my sisters owned. My late grandfather introduced me to Crokinole which quickly became my favourite game and looked forward to play every visit.

I grew up during the Nintendo era and my interests went along with it, all until University where I gave up due to lack of time. I got my Math degree at the University of Ottawa, where I also met my fiance Stephanie. My university years were spend playing Euchre, Wizard, and Cribbage, I had been gaming sparingly in the 90s and early 00s, getting games like Blokus and Valley of the Mammoths. Eventually during my yearly trip to New York City with Stephanie, upon visiting FAO Schwarz, I bought one of my favourite childhood games, Scotland Yard, and the gaming bug has been with me ever since, I had missed it quite a lot!

Since then, well I keep visiting NYC every year and checking out the US Open tennis tournament and my beloved Yankees where I actually got engaged this year, and playing board games. My top gaming partner is my spouse and she loves almost every genre of games. I was pleasantly surprised that she liked Thunderstone: Dragonspire which quickly became my most played and favourite game. I've been fortunate to join a game group where I can learn and play tons of games, including Euros which I really enjoy but don't play often with my friends who prefer shorter games.

Things that I like and would love to discuss: Thunderstone, Quarriors, Catacombs, Space Alert, Nintendo games, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Primus, Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom, Metal music, The X-Files, 24, Twin Peaks, Friday Night Lights, Hustle, Spooks (MI5), James Bond, LOTR movies and novels, Sean Connery, Franco-Belgian graphic novels, XIII, Thorgal, Largo Winch, Tintin, Ottawa Senators, Mario Lemieux, Brett Hull, Dan Marino, Miami Dolphins, NFL, New York Yankees, Montreal Expos, Roger Federer, Tennis, running, my vacations, and my cats.

What's the best thing about living in Gatineau?
What's the worst?

Have you ever tried a wargame?

I've never tried any deck building games, and I see you're a big fan of Thunderstone. What makes this game so great?

d10-1 Personal favourite board games would be Thunderstone, Quarriors, Space Alert, Eminent Domain and Catacombs. For RPG, I haven't had much experience and would say MansionsMountains of Madness where I had a blast! As for Video Games, I'd say Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, and FF2 (SNES).

d10-2 The knowledge available, both from the great databases, but also from all the members. This is a great community.

d10-3 I really appreciate several geeklists made by several members which provide tons of information. No specific example, there would be too many.

d10-4 Longest session? I'd say it was in November on the 2nd day of Ludo-Outaouais, a local gaming convention. I played from 1PM to 2AM non stop, Mansions of Madness, Quebec, Panic Station, Eminent Domain, and Resistance.

d10-5 This would be my first experience playing Battlestar Galactica last November. It was a 5 player game and I was a human. Things were going pretty well and midway I became a Cylon. During the turn the initial Cylon revealed himself, and just as I was about to do the same, another player did. I was a bit dumbfounded as I thought that there were only two. A 3rd player said that he was also a Cylon, and then I showed my card. We all had a laugh, it was 4 Cylons vs. 1, the wrong pile of cards was used or something like that. The unveiled Cylons lost as the other 3 players remained humans. This game is now often referenced at my gaming club when something goes wrong

It's location near Ottawa, while still living in my native province of Quebec.

sxmpxr wrote:

That's a tough one, I suppose it's poorly seen within the province for people speaking Frenglish, being so close to Ottawa.

sxmpxr wrote:

Not sure if Risk and Axis and Allies, and A few acres of Snow count, but these are the only ones that come to mind. I'd love to play them though, this is a genre I have little exposure to.

sxmpxr wrote:

I already knew I liked deck building as a mechanic after playing Dominion, Thunderstone also mixes the dungeon theme which I always loved. I actually feel like I'm in a LOTR-esque world fighting monsters and buying equipment. It plays great as a solo game as well.

Ah yes I had a great deal of fun in MoM, and lots of nice microbadges coming in soon! I wasn't lucky at the start though, having a result of 1,2,1,1,1 in the initial money game! But everything changed when my GM tipped me and I then became a fierce warrior as the combat dice was my friend.

Shame? No, only pride I certainly wasn't born to be a Yankee fan though, I was an Expos fan, and well you know the story. Jeffrey Loria never intended to keep them in Montreal and when they left, I was left to choose a replacement. I liked the Braves (and still do) but when they lost to the Yanks in 96, I was exposed to all their rich (pun intended!) history and became a fan. Combined with my love of NYC, perfect match!

Essen's a bit far for me although a few members of my gaming club did attend. I'd love to go eventually.

Barad_the_dwarf wrote:

Rarely. I've played a few D&D with a few friends who loved to play RPGs in their teens. I didn't like it as much as they did and my character was constantly dragging them behind, I eventually stopped playing. I did however participate in Mountains of Madness and had a lot of fun!

Barad_the_dwarf wrote:

I have, I did buy some James Bond RPG and various missions in the early 90s, and have updated my owned games. Same for the MoM which I've participated in.[/q]

d10-1 I always try to get Yellow, otherwise Black
d10-2 Spring and Fall. I don't like it too hot.
d10-3 I have played Tenor Saxophone for 4 years in high school. I did not continue, as University wasn't an option in Music since I love Math, but I do miss playing it.
d10-4 Always, to enjoy life one has to let himself enjoy the simplest pleasures every time they present themselves.
d10-5 My 2nd name is Sebastien, but I hear that my mother loved Benjamin.
d10-6 A white cheddar rice cake covered with my home made hummus, a a slice of fresh cheese, and a slice of my garden tomatoes. MMMmmm.
d10-7 Saturday is always fun, and Wednesdays are making a big push as I have my weekly game days on Wednesday nights.
d10-8 Around 3:30 PM, as I finished work and arrived home, I can relax and plan what I'll do in the evening.
d10-9 I do know of the show, and some characters like Picard, Kirk, and
Spock, but have never really watched the show.
d10-1d10-0 I enjoy having a nice family. Mind you at this time it's just me, the misses, and a few cats, but planning the future, working on the house, this is what really counts.
d10-1d10-1 That's a tough one. I did have a dream of becoming involved in Franco-Belgian graphic novels in some sort. I can't draw though.

Felicitations! Vous etes le premier GotW qui vien de Gatineau de qui j'ai entendu.

My only two questions are these:

Do you play any of the Strat-o-matic games for the sports you are into and if so do you only play your favorite teams?

And

If you compare the modern Senators opening season (92-93) to the Nordiques worst season, which do you think was worse and why?shake

Paul B

P.S I just may go to the GameSummit you mentioned in Ottawa since they are holding it in the Nepean sportsplex adjacent to my high school. Haven't been to either building in decades.
