Me and my wife like Nightfall, but felt that the standard two-player game became one-sided too early into a match. To remedy this, we added a "goldfish" player.

Set up the archives for two people and grab enough wounds for three. Set up a method for keeping track of who has how many wounds - we sleeved the wounds in red card sleeves and regular cards in clear sleeves. The goldfish doesn't have a deck or play their turn.

When a player has an effect that causes damage or wounds that could target the goldfish, and the goldfish has more wounds than their opponent, it must target the goldfish. When a player attacks, if the goldfish has less wounds than their opponent, the player must have at least one of their minions attack the goldfish.

This helps to keep the game balanced longer, as when one player gets more wounds, the goldfish acts as a buffer to help them rebuild and attack again. It also makes the game more interesting, as sometimes the goldfish can end up with less wounds than both players, and this will cause the players to consider how much they need to split their forces. A few games have even ended with the fish winning.
