I was watching Captain America, and it got me thinking. I live stories in which the figthing powers of WWII gain access to some sort of high tegh weapon, which will undoubtedly "turn the tide of the war in our favour", often using machines not unlike those found in steampunk stories.

Is there a name for this, like there's a name for Steampunk? WWIi-Punk?

Or 'Pulp'.

Stories like that of "Doc Savage", or the Lensman stories by E.E. 'Doc' Smith, or mystery stories by Daschel Hammet used to be published in paperbacks from previously used paper- or 'pulp'.

The slang implies that the books were cheap, kinda trashy, and considered disposable. But they were awesome, none the less.

As grey traces of dawn tinge the eastern sky, the three travellers, men of Willowdale, emerge from the forest's shadow. Fording the river, they turn south, journeying into the dark and forbidding lands of The Necromancer...

I really enjoy speculative historical fiction as mentioned in this thread. I recently read a trilogy (Axis of Time by John Birmingham) that copied the "send modern equipment back in time" trope that made The Final Countdown so enjoyable.

Any book that includes an aircraft carrier from the year 2021 named the USS Hillary Clinton and sends it back in time to the Battle of Midway is already leaning toward awesome.
