When I research the Artifact key, let's say I have 3 artifacts. Do I have to take all 15 resources as one type, or can I take 5 resources of one type and 10 of another? Can I split it up into multiples of 5?

Yes. Each set of five can be a different resource type.

Thanks. I found the explanation in the rule book a little vague:

"you must take 5 resources of one type for each artifact on your hexes"
I initially read the "of one type" as completely one type.

you must: ((take 5 resources of one type) for each artifact on your hexes)

So each set of five must be five of the same resource, but since you repeat the procedure for each artifact, you can get different resources out of it in total.
