Apparently I don't know how to properly use the search function because I could find an answer to this. So here goes:

What are the best medium weight games for two players?

I don't need games that are exclusively two player games, but that a good with two players.

Le Havre gets my vote.
(and Troyes is well worth a look too)
(or for something on the lighter-side-of-medium, Dominion - but I see you already own that )

If you're ok using BGG ratings as a proxy for "best", you can:

Hit Advanced Search
Enter your low and high weights (I would propose 2.3 - 3.1)
Enter your low and high player counts (2 and 2)
Hit Submit

You'll get a list of games sorted from highest rating to lowest. THe first few are Dominion, Race for the Galaxy, and Small World. None are ones I would have actually recommended to you, but all are reasonable suggestions.

Can you give examples of games that would be at the lower and upper ends of your preferred weight range?

Do you have preferences as to any of these?
- Theme
- Game length
- Level and nature of interaction (e.g. attacks, blocking, auctions)
- Cooperative vs. competitive
- Cards (or mostly cards) vs. more of a full board

Castles of Burgundy. Great middle weight game that uses dice but is not dependant of the luck of the dice.

Thanks for the idea. As for the weight of game I was thinking of, games like Steam, Agricola and Puerto Rico are examples (and one's I own or have owned)
I prefer realistic themes for some reason. And I like lengths around an hour or two. And the rest doesn't matter to me.

If you have any questions about these, let me know.

Good luck and have fun!

I'm not really sure what "medium weight" means, but my favorite two player games in order of preference are Innovation, Citadels,Dominion, and Evo (old edition with my posted 2-player variant).

I did not think this game was good with only two players. It is clearly a 3+ game for me and my wife.

Caylus, Le Havre, GOA, At the gates of Loyang are the best for us.

Ah. Your "medium" is higher than mine. I would amend my suggestion to entering weights more like 2.9 - 3.5

With that, the top games listed with realistic themes are Puerto Rico, Twilight Struggle, Power Grid, El Grande, and Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage.

Not my type of game, so I'll disappear in a cloud of smoke now.

Oh, unfortunately, the search doesn't allow searching on "best with" a certain number of players. Maybe someday.

EDIT: ....and....poof!

Indigo, have you enjoyed Upon a Salty Ocean with 2p? It seems up our alley.

I will +1 Gates of Loyang. I've also rather enjoyed both Belfort and Cuba with 2p, although they are both on the heavy side of medium weight.

We've only played it once so far, but it gave a good first impression.

Lots of good suggestions already.

I'll second Belfort and Navegador.

My fiancé and I also really enjoy Egizia and Carson City.

Stone Age is one my wife and I enjoy as a 2-player. She personally cannot stand Agricola, primarily due to the resource denial aspect (which is nigh impossible in SA) and the feeling of not having enough time to do what you need to. By contrast, Stone Age generally provides ample resources to all players; the main points of contention are the Farm, Love Shack and Toolmaker. The dice-rolling coupled with sending variable numbers of meeples to various tasks allows you to get as much or more of a resource than your opponent did in the previous turn. The ability of players to build at their own pace, and to develop strategies around Hut and Civ buying that don't result in penalties for neglecting other areas, make it a more relaxed feel with 2 players.

Agricola - Despite the wife's loathing, I like the deeper thinking and planning this game requires. The myriad choices to feed your family, for instance, allow for much wider strategy than SA's "farm all you can and hunt for the rest, or else starve". The Minor Improvement/Occupation cards add some salt and pepper to an otherwise pretty straightforward farming sim.

The Pillars of the Earth is a recent addition to our collection, and despite an Agricola-esque feeling of not being able to get everything you want done, done, she really likes this one. It's heavier than Stone Age, with two different WP mechanics at different stages of each round, and I would put it firmly in the "medium weight" category even if SA is a bit light for you.

Ingenious is a nice little abstract with surprising depth, that I enjoy though the wife is not that enthused with it. The Knizia mechanic of making your worst points category your final score works really well here.
