Down in rural Cornwall, there's not a great deal of choice when it comes to finding somewhere local to buy games, instead of ordering online. There used to be a really good place at the local market which I think has since closed, and Toymaster in Truro used to have a reasonable selection from what I remember, but since they moved it's nothing like the same.

So does anyone from my neck of the woods know of anywhere else I can look? I've seen a couple of places listed on Yell as being up in the North/East of the county, but something more central would be good.

Any suggestions gratefully received

edit: sorry, just realised this forum is meant more for groups than general queries blush

No don't worry, this sort of query is very pertinent. And to answer it, I've had so much difficulty trying to find shops in Cornwall to stock my game LeCardo that I've now pretty much written the county off.

Strange as it might seem, Cornwall is one of the poorest areas in the UK in terms of growth and economic activity. But hang on, you say, what about tourism? Yes, you'd think that tourism would buoy up the region, but that only really applies in Summer; and Cornwall's picturesqueness and slow pace of life actually have a negative impact, as second homers/retirees (my cousin in Truro included) push up house prices to such an extent that locals find it all but impossible to get a foot on the ladder.

Upshot? Very little point in opening up a family toy shop in Cornwall, let along a specialist hobby game shop. Upshot of that? There aren't any. I may be, indeed hope to be proved wrong, but this is, sadly, the impresion I have formed. Devon on the other hand is in a slighlty better position, with shops in Bridport, Totnes, Exeter, Honiton etc.

On the plus side, the surfing and cliff-walking are great!

Hi,

I have been to the Wassail Games shop in St Austell(well Charlestown actually but St Austell is on the doorstep) and can recommend them.

Very knowledgable and helpful. They are on the geek as well - user name Helen Minall(Wassail Games).

Realise that this is probably more East than you would like but thought I would at least let you know.

Fiona

Yes, sorry, thought they were in Devon. Another outlet that's holding out on me (gnashes teeth).

Many thanks Fiona, I'd seen their name about but wasn't sure if they'd still be going, most of the links on the likes of Yell are gone already. I can manage a trip to St Austell

Cheers guys, and you're right. Cornwall's great for getting outside and doing things, but when it comes to other entertainment we're pretty hobbled.

They used to be in Frome, in Somerset(?)*, which probably explains the broken links.

*Apologies to gamers in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset for my appalling ignorance of the topography of the West Country blush

I'm sure Wassail will be able to order things in for you from time to time. Depending on your location/distance to St Austell. They do this for a number of us. There's a shop in Callington that has some games, otherwise Plymouth also has a couple of places. Devon is better, Exeter and Bristol have the best shops 'close' by!!

Hi Fiona.

Bill used to run the Games Player on line game supplier but since the site isn't operating any more I assume he may have finished. Bill's Penyrn based.

Trolltrader (ebay shop) are based at St Column - not sure that they have a shop as such but they sell cheap games.

Quick up date - Wassail have now moved into a new shop in the center of St Austell. Next to the White River shopping complex.

Coool. Will take a look next time I'm in Sn'ozzle.

I've usually stopped at Clifton Road Games in Exeter on my way down. They're just outside the centre and have a good selection ranging from GMT and Columbia, through some Treefrog and Winsome, and onto Z-Man, Rio-Grande and Mayfair to name but a few. The service there has always been good and friendly, with the guy even once offering to open the shop for me as it was closed between Xmas and New Year.
