I've been reading threads about how this game seems pretty easy. Mainly with the U-Boat coming from the convoy wake area and attacking that way.

In order to avoid this "flaw" lets call it, I've come up with an easy solution that works for me. However, I need some input as far as if it seems realistic or not.

What I do after placing the convoy on the tactical display, and before placing my U-Boat, is I roll the d10. On the result of 1-8 I place the U-Boat in the tactical display section corresponding to it. The sections I'm talking about start at the convoy wake (1) and go clockwise up to section 8 (does that makes sense?). On the result of a 9 or 10 (0) it's my choice to determine where I want to place my U-Boat.

For me, this seems to make sense. I've read a bit about U-Boats and I know a majority of the time they weren't in the ideal attacking position against convoys. However, I don't know if it's too harsh of a rule. Roughly 20% of the time I should be getting my pick right?

Anyways, let me know what you think. I just wanted to shoot this idea out since I've been messing with it in my games for a bit now.

I like the idea. I'll have to test it out myself. I agree with your premise though. U-Boat battles were far from ideal most of the time.

There is a U-Boat Placement variant on V6 of the Campaign Logs. See the files section -> Alternate U-Boat Leader Campaign & U-Boat Logs and Variants.

That one only has a 30% chance of forcing the user to place their U-boat, unless they are shaken, then it's a 50% chance.

Obviously you can play with the percentages. I have played this variant a couple of times, and its caused some interesting situations. My preference is to only have it happen occasionally.

There are also some variants that involve rotating Escort ships to different areas after they are placed on the display. That is intersting also (especially if they rotate towards the back of the convoy), but again it's only an occasional thing. I think it's an official DVG variant that is posted on the DVG.com web site.

That's great. Thanks guys! I've taken a look at the variants and will more than likely try them out sometime, but seeing as how I just recently got this game I wanted to try a lighter variant of my own while still getting the basic rules down.
