We started the RETRIBUTION scenario, labeled "a short scenario for two players" as a filler after another game ended and we had time left in the evening. Well, it might be small (three ships on one side, ten very small ones on the other), but "short" seems optimistic, since those ten ships come in one by one, and only when the rebel player has collected enough of them will he create the "Freedom Fleet" at the secret base on Clandestine that will sweep down on Earth for the final battle.

However, those same factors make that a perfect scenario to pick and continue later, and so we played the first ship and decided to call it a day there. The government "Enforcers" (using the black and white counters "for sinister effect" as the rules recommend) started in orbit around Jupiter and Mercury, and on Luna. Unsurprisingly, the first rebel ship started from Mars, moving along the inner Asteroid belt on a course that could have taken it either to Earth or to Clandestine. Two of the enforcer ships tried a pincer movement on it from Mercury and Luna, but the rebel corvette managed to slip between them (the corsair coming from Mercury managed to fire once but missed). Rather than turn directly towards Earth, it passed the frigate from Luna at high speed and then decelerated to approach Earth from the other side. The frigate came after it, but could not quite catch it, and the rebels crashed their ship into Earth in a demonstration of the revolutionary threat. This means that in the next round, one of the three Enforcer ships will have to stay within the Luna/Earth detection boundary. The tactical error made by the enforcers was probably not to use any torpedoes on the first two passes - by the time the frigate got into range again, a torpedo would not have been able to catch up with the rebel ship. They will not be as forgetful on the second round, especially since most likely the commanders of the two ships were demoted to garrison duty on Ceres...

However, the next rebel ship will now be launched when both the Enforcers close to Earth have to come in to refuel and refit, so presumably a good opportunity will present itself to sweep past them to reach either Clandestine or Earth.

This is probably my favorite scenario. I love playing the part of the rebels, trying to smash through the defense at breakneak speeds.

Enjoy!
