This 1998 Spiel das Jahres was brought to the table for the first time (other at the Bayou Wars convention). We used the Amigo rules wherein players could only fill their hands to 8 cards. Those who had played before (Lenny, Ashton, Jay & I) all were in agreement that this made the game much more challenging.

For those unfamiliar with the game, it is basically a simplification of Alan Moon's tremendously popular (and almost legendary ) Elfenroad, which was demanding up to $200 on the re-sale market. Players must manage travel tokens and cards to traverse the land and visit as many of the 20 cities as possible. The players who visits the most cities AND ends up closest to his secret target city will claim the victory.

With the Amigo rule of only filling one's hand to eight cards, travel is a bit more difficult and the roadblock tokens present more of an obstacle. It definitely adds to the challenge of the game.

Here are the round-by-round scores:

Round 1: Jay 6, Ashton 5, Lenny 5, Greg 5, Eric 4, Darren 4
Round 2: Ashton 10, Jay 10, Greg 10, Eric 9, Lenny 8, Darren 6
Round 3: Ashton 15, Greg 15, Jay 14, Lenny 13, Eric 12, Darren 12
Round 4: Greg 18 (On City), Jay 16 (On city - 2 cards in hand), Ashton 16 (On city - 0 cards), Lenny 16 (3 spaces away, 2 cards in hand), Darren 16 (3 spaces away - 1 card), Eric 15 (4 spaces away)

The ratings: Darren 7, Eric 7, Jay 6, Lenny 6, Ashton 6, Greg 6
