Here's a guy who is trying something different in education:

In a nutshell, he is using out of school time for lectures and in-school time for working on problems, projects and writing assignments where teachers are available to help.

Interesting. Heaven knows *something* has to work better than the current regimen. It does seem silly that the lecture model presumes to treat all students as uniform vessels to be filled with information, then the actual application, wherein students often display individual needs or talents, takes place out of class when the teacher can't respond meaningfully to specific needs. It would be a difficult twist, but I'd be willing to give it a go for a term if his results are significantly different than the norm.
