I want to make standing character tokens like those in Arkham Horror but I don't know where to get the base clips. Anyway to DIY the base?

They are often referred to as "card stands" if you do a search.

It always bugged me that the water gauge in Forbidden Island was not vertical like god had meant them to be. They were too tall & heavy for the stands I had, it still wobbled & fell if table was bumped. I solved it by gluing the stand to a heavy (blue) poker chip.

Problem solved, but in the process of looking around my studio for answers, I figured out a really cool pimp for the game: a tall test tube marked with the flood levels and blue marbles that are dropped in as the flood cards are drawn. Yeehaa.

If you are really cheap and lazy like me, these work fine. Just take of the silver handles after you put the tokens in.

I know it's not what you asked, but you can buy exactly the bases used in (recent editions of) Arkham Horror:

FFG Plastic Stands

Does anyone make one of these that's more of a heavy pawn? I wound up gluing 4 of the Arkham stands to some old glass chess rooks to give them some kind of presence. Would like to find something in metal, though.
