Since my last post in Chit Chat was "successful" in that it generated conversation that has surpassed 100 posts, but a fail in that the "discussion" has devolved, and the entire thread has been moves to RSP, I thought I'd try something definitely lighter.

Why are certain foods limited to certain times of day??

Why does a coffee seem to be a more acceptable morning beverage than soda? How about I have a bowl of ice cream instead of a bowl of frosted flakes? What about a couple cookies instead of a donut? Slice of pizza instead of some bacon?

I am not sure. My husband's favourite breakfast foods in order are:

1. Cherry Pie
2. Leftover Pizza
3. Steak and Eggs
4. Bubble & Squeak
5. Rice

And more often we will have pancakes for supper rather than breakfast.

Fried leftovers in butter (usually has mashed potatoes as the main part) and when it gets nice and hot you add an egg or two so it all sticks together.

My family's favourite version is leftover mashed potatoes with mashed turnip.

Melt some butter in a fry pan (cast iron is great for this). Add mashed potatoes and cabbage or turnip or carrots (whatever cooked vegetable you have left over) and heat thoroughly. Break an egg or two depending on how much stuff you have and mix up quickly while the egg cooks. Form into one large pancake or a couple of smaller ones and brown on one side and then the other. Serve piping hot. Yummy! And yes bacon works real well in this as does left over ham.

Edit: note - my family has always added eggs, however I have had it other places with no egg as well.

When I was a bachelor, I would regularly eat spaghetti for breakfast and pancakes for dinner.

What's interesting, though, is that in many other cultures, there isn't particular food that's usually eaten for breakfast. Growing up, it was difficult trying to convince my Korean grandma that last night's dinner leftovers are just not acceptable for breakfast.

Edit: ... and we're not talking about pizza leftovers, either.

Those were the only two things that my daughter would eat when she was small (age 3 to 6, I'd say). We'd struggle to get a few bits of hamburger, or pork chops, or vegetables into her but she would clean up a plate of pasta or pancakes.
So we'd have pancakes for dinner quite often and leftover pasta often made a breakfast appearance.

BTW, my favorite breakfast is a turkey club sandwich (with bacon - natch!)

Bubble and squeak (at least the English version) is fried up leftover mashed potato and veg (usually greens)..

It is very good as part of a fried breakfast. Bacon, sausages, fried egg, black pudding the works.

Bacon's an any time food.

I also really like breakfast food late at night. I think a lot of people do - Denny's and IHOP were founded on this idea.
