It has occurred to me, and many others, that despite how much fun Panic Station can be to play, it is, quite frankly, a ridiculous thematic set up.

Some general points are:
1. Why send in all these teams of two - why not just one big team?
2. Why can only one character in the team shoot? How the hell does that work?
3. Why are they forced to trade items with everybody they walk past? Do you swap staplers every time you pass someone at the office?
4. Why does trading spread the infection? What have they been doing that gun?
5. Why does searching a room twice breed parasites?
6. Why does infecting one character also immediately infect its partner?
7. How can they share items from one end of the ship to the other?

The answer? This is not an a game about an abandonded space mine at all. This is a chilling recreation of a 1970s wife swap party just as STDs begin to make their presence felt. Its a butt-jiggling free for all with deadly results (just like the real things). But such a theme would never be embraced by the family minded industry of board gaming. So the designer had to hastily retheme his masterpiece in what can only be said to be a hatchet job with more holes than a Scotsman's underpants.

This knowledge provides us with all the answers to the questions above.
1. They come in pairs because they are married.
2. Not to put to fine a point on it, but only one partner tends to shoot.
3. Party ettiquette is to share and share alike. When you meet someone in  a new room its only polite to do something to them.
4. And that sort of sharing leads to spreading infections.
5. When one enters a room, the host may have prepared a variety of toys for the people to use. The first time a room is entered these will be neatly arranged, freshly cleansed, and shining like a dew drop on a winter's morn. The second time someone enters the room these toys will be used. I will leave it to your imagination what they look like then, but using them will lead to infection.
6. They are married. Tragically the diseases borne by one partner will, inevitably, be transferred to the other.
7. Since the introduction of no fault divorces, all goods in a marriage are taken to be held in common. What is mine is yours, what is yours is mine.

I hereby call for the game to be released in the full glory of what it was meant to be - Panty Station

Andrew,

You make valid points here. I guess it's up to gamers to use their imaginations when it comes to interpreting the theme(s) of a certain board game. A lot can be said of other board games and their mechanics.

I would ask however, should this post be an actual review of the game or just general statement as you have placed in this category?

Really?
You have to ask?

We all know by now that the theme has more holes than a goulf course/ country club (18+, both the holes and the statement). On that, the cat has been out of the bag so long, the bag has already moved to another country, married and got two little teabags. But this thread is so much sarcasm it spits you in the face so hard, you need pretty good reflexes to not get red-eye (oh, sorry, mislabeled the colour here)...

And we have been searching for a theme.
This is fantastically well-put. And absolutely fitting. Thank you for that. Of course, we have to change the "equipment" of the game.
Which could be a bit more complicated. Apart from "Gas Can is Condom", I "came" up empty so far. And even that is not that fitting for the "final" task...

Of course, the atmosphere then is not so much paranoia, as hilarity - and including steamy puns...

David - in this game you would not want to be "shot" at...

Come on, take it easy. You have to admit it is a funny retheme.

At least the Antidote card in the mini-expansion is still thematically appropriate for Panty Station.

It's just a game. Sitting and questioning it like this is like questioning why people always run upstairs in horror movies.

They just do.

The sad part is that, given my friends, if this game really was Panty Station, I could get it to the table far more often.
