I would like to have some appropriately dramatic music playing in the background during our SE:4X games. What are your personal recommendations? I'm definitely going for the Stars Wars orchestral arrangements, but I'm curious what suggestions other people have! Thanks.

Put on Pandora. Make a station for either "Clubbed to Death" by Rob Dougan or the band Epica. That's all ya need

Finally someone else who appreciates a fitting soundtrack!

Here's a list of fitting game soundtracks I put into my "Space" playlist I listen to while playing most sci-fi games. I ranked them roughly by order of my personal preference:

EVE Online (http://www.eveonline.com/download/music/)
EVE Project Remixes (http://www.alienhand.dk/modules/news/index.php?storytopic=2)
Homeworld 1 ("http://homeworld.wikia.com/wiki/Relic_Community_Homeworld_Soundtrack_2.0")
Homeworld 2 ("http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?178320-Homeworld2-Community-Soundtrack-2.0")
Master of Orion 2
EVE Sounds for Flying ("http://rettic.com/post/3104091769/sff-origins-the-federation-suite")
Sins of A Solar Empire
Distant Worlds
Star Trek Armada 2
Space Empires 4 & 5
StarCraft 1 & 2
Armada 2526
Gratuitious Space Battles
Black Prophecy
Command & Conquer Series

Mostly those are straight from the game install, or easily found online through searching. I guess you can just condense it down to "every sci-fi game you can think of".

Check out the Space & Beyond series by The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. All 3 are double-CD offerings. The first one is mostly Star Trek music with sci-fi sound effects thrown in-between songs. The second one (Alien Invasion) is even better with songs from movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still, Dune, Battle Beyond the Stars, Forbidden Planet, Starship Troopers, Space: Above & Beyond, etc. The 3rd one (Space 3: Beyond Final Frontier) has music from Aliens, Ghostbusters, Judge Dredd, Robocop, The Cape, etc.

I love these CDs for my Sci-Fi gaming!

Man or Astro-Man play great SF-tinged surf rock, they might fit the bill!

Christopher Franke's scores to the Babylon 5 TV series seem like a perfect match for SE:4X.

The music from Close Encounters. Also can't go wrong with any of the Star Wars music.

If you dont mind something a bit harder, anything by Voivod should do the trick, but especially Dimension Hatross, Nothingface and The Outer Limits.

Everyone has missed the Godfather of space music:

Gustav Holst (1874-1934): "The Planets."

John Williams based all of his space-film theme music on Holst.

I like the silence of space, music distracts me and I cant concentrate on my movement and planning orders.

As it is, I have to put up with

Appropriate Musicfor a game? Bah

Conan, the brilliant strategist, statesman, ladies man, philanthropist, Rhode Scholar and scientist summed it up quite succinctly.

"To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women."

He did so with a rather awesome soundtrack by Basil Poledouris though. One of my all-time favourites. Doesn't fit this game though.
