I've read a few times that the conversion kit contains the cards etc to convert the heroes and monsters from 1st to 2nd edition but does anyone know if it contains the new rules and adventures. Is the conversion kit the full deal to play the 2nd edition using the old edition ?

No it is not. To play with the 2nd Edition you will need the 2nd Edition base game. The conversion kit just contains the new stat cards for 1E's Heroes and Monsters so that you can play 2nd Edition with them.

If it's like most FFG games, though, the rules are hardly enough to play the game with - there is almost always going to be so much necessary information on the cards that playing without the actual game would be very tough.

With Descent 1E, also, while the rules were online, the Quest books were not.

Yeah, the rulebook will be online, but the adventures and maps almost certainly will not be. I somehow doubt you'd be able to exactly recreate them with 1e tiles anyway, though you may be able to approximate.

You may or may not be able to revamp the old 1e quests and dungeon levels to be played with 2e rules; it's hard to say how much rebalancing would be required to make that work.

You'd also need to hunt up some kind of replacement for the defense dice that 2e adds, and you may or may not be able to reuse the 1e attack dice, depending on whether or not the 2e attack dice have been radically changed in terms of face values/colour composition.

Long story short, you can probably kitbash something to play "1.5e" without buying the 2e base box, but given the amount of house ruling you'd probably need to do, the 2e stat cards from the conversion kit probably won't do you much good. You'd probably be better off keeping the 1e hero(/monster) stats you already have and house ruling those along with everything else to suit your needs.

What little info FFG has given us so far one way of speeding up the game is that there are cards for effects etc. which all have texts on the cards. Therefore having rules online won't help much. If you want to play 2nd edition you have to buy the core set.

The conversion kit is just a nod towards the 1st edition owners who might feel that FFG diluted the value of their investment with 2nd edition release. And of course it is a clever way of making even more money out of collectors and people who wish to inject even more options to their games.

Some thoughts:

So as others have pointed out, gone are the days of the big box. Mansions of Madness template may be the new way of FFG? This would make a lot of sense given the economy and all.

1. Purchase Descent 2nd edition
2. Purchase 2nd edition conversion kit
3. ???
4. Profit! : )

Maybe this will work out really well. With the conversion kit for first edition we would preserve some of our investments by having a nice slew of monsters and heroes on hand. So instead of having to buy a full expansion, we only need the campaign module card pack as we already have the miniatures.

Of course with the newer tiles and slick looking new miniatures it will be very tempting to buy the full expansions. devil
