I've always found Roman history a bit more interesting, thus I usually go with the western map. But I've tried both and they work just as well.

If I knew what "Occident" and "Orient" meant I would join in the pole. I think the German side of the board (Mediterranean) is probably better balanced. Mark Stretch did a little analyses after an Antike tournament a few years ago:
