What I think could give this game even more options, since I find that people tend to do similar choices after some plays.
1) perhaps introduce a couple of new ship types.
Battlecruiser, something between cruiser and dreadnought
Destroyer, a lighter cruiser
these two could basically be like cruisers but have 1 slot more or 1 less respectively.
Carrier, defensive ship but can carry two/three interceptors, allows for efficient moves or even strategic moves, perhaps letting the carried interceptors move after carriers move?
2) more technologies
combined upgrades like +1 computer and +1 hull, or other combinations?
cloaking devices - avoid pinning
consequently some technology that neutralises cloaking device
terraform - change the colour of one planet as an action + pay resources
banking - make conversions 1 to 1 between resources
something that you as an attacker would shoot first in case of a tie
mass move - you can move 4 instead of 3 or perhaps 6 instead of 3 as long as you only move ships smaller than cruisers
the idea is that if we are given even more choices perhaps we will see very different ship types battle? It would also be possible to outfit ships to your liking, to suit your style of play.
