Ban the IP addresses ...

Having had to man the barricades as an admin on another site, I can confirm that this is not fun, if you don't have the right tools.

We seem to do fairly well on this site. I suspect that is largely because the software is unique - if you have a forum that uses one of the standard packages, then the spambots know exactly what to do to get in and post, and they can certainly post stuff faster than you can delete it. On the forum I used to be an admin on, we had to resort to standard anti-spam defenses: every post from a noob was vetted by the admins before it was released to the forum. Once you had enough OK posts, you were then allowed to post without admin vetting, but still could not have things like a signature, or post any links. You had to have pretty much proved yourself to be a real member before you got those rights.

It's all coming from new user accounts. Temporarily shutting down new user registrations (or hardening registration verification system) would probalby be more effective.

Yup - this bunch is outdoing the "Toronto Escorts" guy, and that's not easy.

I just flagged this thread in case it's a trick to get everyone to let their guard down and stop flagging.

We have been. These accounts have all used unique ones so far.

Keep flagging them and I'll keep squashing them.

1. use Akismet: http://akismet.com/

2. ask a board game related question during registration (something easy)

3. make it such that a new user cannot post links in its first post.

Nearly the entire forum was taken up by spam messages relating to watching Soccer online with live streams. Some keep coming back but it is much, much less.

I just checked the forums. Things seem quiet. Can anyone fill me in on whatever exciting adventure I missed today?

Spambots linking to hot meeple-on-meeple action?
