I was arguing with one war gamer. He claimed that since Dune has area control and area movement thus Dune is a Diplomacy variant. I argued that Dune has no simultaneous action.

No.

Though your friend might mean something other than 'variant.'

So you might be having different arguments with each other.

I've found that people say very silly things when they are high on drugs.

Dune is a Cosmic Encounter variant, if anything.

Wow, El Grande is a Diplomacy variant. And Risk. And Small World, and Dominant Species.

Heck...

Other than the element of negotiation and alliances, there's really not much connection. OTOH, Dune is immediately connected to Cosmic Encounters.

They key mechanic of Diplomacy is assigning secret orders then executing them after they're committed. It takes a great stretch of the imagination to view Dune's wheel-and-cards battle system as similar. Take, by contrast, A Game of Thrones, which clearly draws heavily on the mechanics of Diplomacy, though not backstabbing-secret-alliance playstyle.

I was gonna say.

If area control and area movement are the only prerequisites for making a game a Diplomacy variant, there's quite a large number of diplomacy variants out there. Many of which, I suspect, will prove to have been published before Diplomacy. How curious.

Heck, Chess could be qualified by those criteria if you consider each square an "area."

As a serious argument, the binding deals insure that Dune plays nothing like Dip.
