It is 1944, somewhere in the Baltic region. The harsh winter has taken its toll on both sides. Pushing their enemy back towards the German frontier, a squad of Russian guards advance upon two fortified lines of Volksgrenadiers up ahead.
Attempting to outflank them, a Russian group of 5 men moves to their right in the dim light of dawn. An unexpected marsh, not on any of their maps, makes progress slow. Meanwhile a group of Germans armed with an LMG spot this outflanking attempt and counter with a move to their left, eyeing a small hill on which to set up their gun.
Fearing they will be cut off from their comrades, a second small german group follow them, settling down in thick bocage at the foot of the hill. Across the valley in the early mist they can hear Russian guns testing the courage of their comrades on the hill. The ranging shots have little effect though.
To improve their chances, the Russian fire group advance into a nearby gully and setup their guns. The German group on the hill spot their movements however, and fire down into the gully with supressing fire. Several Russians are pinned as a result.
Attempting to distract the Germans, the two other Russian squads move up on the left and right of their comrades in the gully. The German fire group take the opportunity to move into a grain store they spot on the maps, and set up their LMG inside. With their comrades entrenched in the woods and themselves in a defensible structure, they sit and wait for the inevitable Russian attack.
Coming out of the gully and into a patch of woodland, the Russian fire group open up on the Germans in the grain store and pin several soldiers temporarily. Unfortunately for the Germans they are also restricted by rusting barbed wire which restricts their actions in the building. The wire is soon cut away however and lay down some fire on the centre Russian group in the woodland. What follows is a huge firefight for several hours. Neither the Russian left or right groups can risk advancing when the Germans are capable of such firepower.
The light is fading. Having lost several soldiers to the LMG, the Russians take stock. Their orders say they must advance and assault the German lines of conscripts. And being the brave Russians that they are they, they do so. Private Schussel, the tired but determined LMG gunner, smiles as several Russians come into his sights. He opens fire.
More Russians are pinned. They are courageous but they also see the folly in advancing on the lines when the German fire is so intense. Attempting to move forward again, many are killed or run back, back to their lines. And so ends the battle for that day. The Germans have only lost one man, caught in the open he was wounded and routed. The toll has been heavy on the Russians with 4 dead and 4 routed.
