Of course I've been up all night! Not because of caffeine, it was insomnia. I couldn't stop thinking about coffee.

There were a lot of firsts in this session. The first attempt at my own deck and a multi-sphere deck (Spirit, Tactics). My first attempt at this scenario and the first time I killed a Hill Troll.

My heroes were Eowyn, Dunhere and Gimli. Things started off well with a very successful quest due to a good draw from the encounter deck, and a good starting hand. I had a Dwarrowdelf Axe (attachment, dwarf gets +1 attack and deals one damage after attacking) for Gimli to fondle and I managed to get Winged Guardian (ally, 4 defense but costs 1 resource to keep in play when defending) out by discarding it to boost Eowyn's quest and then playing it out of my discard with Stand and Fight. I had Khazad Khazad (Event, give dwarf +3 attack for a phase) in hand as well so the fight with the Troll was starting to look very doable.

I would have loved to find a way to hurt Gimli a bit but no other enemies came up. I started with a threat of 28 so I only had a couple of turns before the Troll came a knocking. I contemplated letting him wail on Gimli but the risk was too high, if Gimli died I was sunk. I put the Winged Guardian on defense and then the shit storm started! The Shadow card was Wolf Rider, which starts it's own attack against the player complete with a blocking character if you want, and its own shadow card.

"What unimaginable good fortune! Gimli can can take a few knocks. Wolf Rider has 2 attack so I can boost up Gimli just before I attack the Troll! All I have to do is let the Wolf attack go undefended, then apply the damage to my blood-frenzied axe-wielding friend."

I was beside myself with sly contentment, until I drew the wolf's shadow card. Dol Guilder Orcs! Those bastards!! They add 3 to an undefended attack... oopsies....

I couldn't very well kill off my only source of tactics, or Eowyn, so Dunhere was mauled to death by nasty wolf riders. Then some more stuff happened before I technically lost but honestly you all know how doomed I was.... doom doom doomidy doomed! It was sad. I didn't even make it to the river. I did manage to take down the Troll and a Marsh Addler before I was dragged down to the forest floor.

I tried and failed twice more tonight. The second attempt was swift and painful. The third, and final attempt, lasted a lot longer. I managed to get to the second stage of the scenario, things were looking okay despite a serious lack of tactics card draws but I started having a very hard time questing with too many lands in the staging area.

Land is rough. When you start to have trouble questing because there's too much land what can you do? You can't travel anywhere because you can't quest to explore your current location. My deck has a few ways of dealing, like the tracker, but I got him out too late.

In general, don't let locations build up in the staging area.

Are you set on using a Spirit/Tactics deck? If not, I recommend trying a Spirit/Leadership deck, replacing Gimli with Theodred. You've apparently got Khazad-Dum; do you have the Shadows of Mirkwood cycle as well? There are a few cards which would help. Escort from Edoras, The Riddermark's Finest, Ride to Ruin (which works nicely with Snowbourn Scout), and West Road Traveller. And with Leadership, you'll be able to include several powerful cards from the Core Set: Faramir, Valiant Sacrifice, Sneak Attack, and Steward of Gondor. Guard of the Citadel and Silverlode Archer instead of Horseback Archer and Veteran Axehand will give you more willpower for questing.

But if Gimli goes, who fights the troll? I've found in my attempts that you can lose the game before the troll is dead if you don't have an effective attack against him.

Good call.

I do have the Mirkwood cycle as well. I have Escort from Edoras, Riddermark's Finest, and Ride to Ruin in the deck as well. I certainly see how Snowbourn Scout could help! Such a cheap Rohan ally to sacrifice to Ride to Ruin plus it puts progress tokens out itself.

I don't really want to design a Spirit/Leadership deck at this point. I went with Tactics to help with combat and I think there's merit to that decision. You mention the nice Leadership cards I could have but that's in place of the nice tactics cards I currently have With my inexperience and only 3 tries at this quest it's hard to say if it's the deck's fault or not. I'm going to make some tweaks tonight and see if I can do better.

Thanks for your input, with 6 possible two-sphere combinations it's going to take awhile to get the feel for them all.

Yea, that troll is scary. That's one of the reasons I went with Gimli. With Khazad Khazad, the axe, feint, and quick strike I thought I could make quick work of him.

Three sphere decks work well along the Anduin. You could try Tactics-Leadership-Spirit. WIth Gimli, Theodred, and Eowyn you have a couple of turns to prepare for the troll. With Theodred's help you could get Citadel Plate on Gimli at the start of turn 3. You could also play a Northern Tracker at the start of turn 3.

Questing! Fighting! Resources! Life is good.

Try to hold off completing the first stage until you are prepared for the second stage.
