Roc, Paper, Scissors: 26 Sept. 1939

An unofficial scenario from the Fighting Wings gaming world: http://world.std.com/~ted7/scenarios.htm

A Blackburn Roc comes upon a Heinkel He59B-2 over the North Sea.
Roc: 0.6, speed 2.5, 6 hexes directly behind the He59B-2: 0.1, speed 2.5

BW rules: 1:6 (range modified) defensive fire, banked Roc turret fire ranges as Normal Dive (which should apply to all banked defensive fire).

Modified by: FW H/M/L&F initiative hierarchy, normal (non-inverted) FW banking rules, Incremental Odds, and Pythagorean Ranges.

Turn 1) The Heinkel, as a M class A/C will always go first. Upon spotting the Roc the pilot throttles up (Pwr =1) to ‘accelerate’ to Max Level Speed of 3.0 and gunners await the British attack. Their survival depends on either the Roc running out of ammo (12) or winning the approaching gun duel. The Roc pilot has a plan but does not want to show too much in order to diminish the time the He59 has to react so he just accelerates (Emer Pwr = 5) to close the gap.

He59B-2: 0.1, 2.5, Wings Level, Nose Level, Pwr 1, Move 2

Roc: 0.6, 2.5, Wings Level, Nose Level, -200, Pwr5 + 2, +0.5 Speed, Move 2

Turn 2) The Roc is accelerating but the gap has not yet begun to narrow.

He59B-2: 0.1, 2.5 + 0.5 carry, Wings Level, Nose Level, Pwr 1 + 1 carry, Move 3

Roc: : 0.4, 3.0 + 0.5 carry, Wings Level, Nose Level, -200, Pwr5 + 2 + 2 carry, , +0.5 Speed, Move 3

Turn 3) The Roc is beginning to close the gap.

He59B-2: 0.1, 2.5, Wings Level, Nose Level, Pwr 1 + 2 carry, Move 2

Roc: : 0.2, 3.5 + 0.5 carry, Wings Level, Nose Level, Pwr5 + 4 carry -4 Sideslip Decel, +0.5 Speed, Move 3 Sideslip L 1

No combat at R4 to conserve ammo for the coming shootout.

Turn 4) The Roc is has made its move for soon coming alongside the Heinkel, banking so the Dorsal Turret can bring its guns to bear on the ‘in the salt spray’ seaplane. The German can’t react just yet as a bit more speed is available.

He59B-2: 0.1, 2.5 + 0.5 carry, Wings Level, Nose Level, -100*, Pwr 1 + 1 + 3 carry, +0.5 Speed , Move 3

*Scenario notes allow seaplanes to be at 0.0 (skimming just above the waves).

R3- 1:6 -10 range modifier: DR10 -10 = 0, 4 hits with Controls Critical of +1 to banks and slips

Roc: : 0.2, 4.0, Wings Level, Nose Level, Pwr0, Move 2RB 2

R3- 8 Attack vs 12 Defense (Incremental 8/12 = 0.67; [(0.67- 0.5)/(1-0.5)] = 0.34, so DR of 34 or less to get 1:1 odds, DR27) 1:1 -5 size modifier: 24 -5 = 19, 3 hits

Turn 5) The Roc pilot is having 2nd thoughts, critical damage on the lowest probability defensive shot of this contest and only 3 hits away from Severe Damage. Return fire is effective but the Heinkel requires 11 hits to get to Severe Damage.

He59B-2: 0.0, 3.0, Wings Level, Nose Level, Pwr 1 -3 Sideslip Decel, Move 3

R2- 1:6 -15 range modifier: DR72 -15 = 57, 0 hits

Roc: : 0.2, 4.0, Wings RB, Nose Level, -100, Pwr0 + 1 (no carry due to Max Speed), Move 4

R2- 12 Attack vs 12 Defense, 1:1 -5 size modifier: 35 -5 = 30, 2 hits

Turn 6) Damage is proportionately equal. The Heinkel ‘dances’ away and hopes for better luck.

He59B-2: 0.0, 3.0, Wings Level, Nose Level, Pwr 1 -2 carry, Move 1 Slideslip R 2

R1.5- 1:6 -20 range modifier: DR43 -20 = 23, 0 hits (Ammo drum empty, needs 3 turns to reload*)

*At 0.0 no banking is allowed so the Ventral gun cannot be used.

Roc: : 0.1, 4.0, Wings RB, Nose Level, Pwr5 -4 Sideslip Decel (no carry due to Max Speed), Move 4

R1.5- 14.5 Attack vs 18 Defense, (Incremental 14.5/18 = 0.81; (so DR of 62 or less to get 1:1 odds, DR20) 1:1 -5 size modifier: 02 -5 = -03, 6 hits with Controls Critical of +1 to banks and slips

Turn 7) Excellent British shooting has the Heinkel at Severe Damage and the German is frantically trying to reload. But overshooting into the Frontal Gun arc is a concern. (The Heinkel probably made an error, Idle should have been selected to try to force an overshoot by the Roc.)

He59B-2: 0.0, 3.0 (overspeed), Wings Level, Nose Level, Pwr 0 -1 carry -2 damage -2 overspeed, -0.5 Speed, Move 3

1st reloading turn

Roc: 0.1, 4.0, Wings RB, Nose Level, Pwr Idle , Move Slideslip R 3
R1 -17 Attack vs 12 Defense, (Incremental 17/12 = 1.42; (so DR of 42 or less to get 2:1 odds, DR48) 1:1 -5 size modifier: 50 -5 = 45, 1 hit

Turn 8) The Heinkel is heavily damaged but can take 5 more hits before it goes down.

He59B-2: 0.0, 2.5 (overspeed), Wings Level, Nose Level, Pwr 0 -2 damage -1 overspeed, Move 2

2nd reloading turn

Roc: 0.1, 3.5 + 0.5 carry, Wings RB, Nose Level, Pwr Idle , Move 3
R0.5- 20 Attack vs 30 Defense, (Incremental 20/30 = 0.67; (so DR of 34 or less to get 1:1 odds, DR20) 1:1 -5 size modifier: 90 -5 = 85, 0 hits

Turn 9) The Heinkel gets a reprieve.

He59B-2: 0.0, 2.5 + 0.5 carry (overspeed), Wings Level, Nose Level, Pwr 0 -3 carry -2 damage -1 overspeed, -0.5 Speed, Move 3

Final reloading turn

Roc: 0.1, 3.0 + 0.5 carry, Wings RB, Nose Level, Pwr Idle , Move 3
R0.5- 20 Attack vs 30 Defense, (Incremental 20/30 = 0.67; (so DR of 34 or less to get 1:1 odds, DR21) 1:1 -5 size modifier: 43 -5 = 38, 2 hits

Turn 10) The Heinkel can hope for a change of luck.

He59B-2: 0.0, 2.0, Wings Level, Nose Level, Pwr 1 -1 carry -2 damage, Move 2

R0.5- 1:6 -25 range modifier: DR38 -25 = 13, 0 hits

Roc: 0.1, 2.5, Wings RB, Nose Level, Pwr Idle , Move 2

R0.5- 20 Attack vs 30 Defense, (Incremental 20/30 = 0.67; (so DR of 34 or less to get 1:1 odds, DR74) 1:2 -5 size modifier: 03 -5 = -02, 5 hits with Wings Critical – Breaking Off

Epilogue) The last 5 hits would have put the Heinkel into the water but a seaplane at altitude 0.0 would ease contact; however, with the wing breaking off, the plane flips just before impact – no survivors.

Postscript) The Incremental Odds did not have a major effect on the outcome. Severe Damage would have been delayed 3 turns (until turn 9) but the Wing Failure Critical Hit on turn 10 would have been the same (total damage would have been 16 of 17 instead of 19). The average DR was 36.5; it was a matter of which side had the most luck.

I totally thought this was a write-up about a giant bird attacking a WWII fighter. I was really enthralled, until I started reading about the roc's ammunition concerns. I was thinking, "what kind of ammo would a giant violent bird use?" There can be only one answer.

You Mid-West boys need to get out a little more; it's not all chickens, corn, and cows.

Nice write up.

Nice to know some of these scenarios actually get used. I hope you enjoyed it.

I take it you used the Buffalo Wings rules?
