Hummerhorns' forced effect:

"After Hummerhorns engages you, deal 5 damage to a single hero you control."

Do I get to subtract my defensive strength from a bleaching of that magnitude? That's an awful lot of damage for one hero. In a leadership/lore deck, is there any way to defend or recover from such a brutal attack?

Nope, this effect ignores character defense, so you probably want to avoid engaging this enemy unless you've got Citadel Plate on someone (if that someone is Gloin, then you probably WANT to engage it! ).

Some methods of dealing with it are: Gandalf, Dunhere, Infighting, Descendent of Thorondor.

You don't get defense. It's brutal. Keep your threat low, give some Citadel Plate, use Dunhere to kill it before it grows, or have Gandalf zap it with his pinecones of doom, among other things.

Wow, he really is a baddy. Thanks, guys. I was holding Sneak Attack and praying that I would draw Gandalf but alas, the cards were against me.

The only cards I know of that help significantly are Fortune or Fate, Dunhere, Landroval, and Citadel Plate. None of these are in the Leadership or Lore spheres.

Sometimes the Hummerhorns shadow effect can be even worse if it kills off the defender. You can still lose one hero and everyone else also takes a wouned.

I think Frodo can also help. A threat increase of 5 is not nice but commonly preferable to losing a hero.

I'm finding Dunhere in my decks more and more, lately. Mostly because of this card and the Hill Troll.

If I remember correctly, Hummerhorns have no defense and an engagement level of 40....so they are pretty easy to take out with Dunhere as long as they come out early enough in the game, or you can use some threat reduction cards.

Also, if you run Lore in one of your decks, Denethor's ability to discard the top card of the encounter deck comes in handy as well.

How does Dunhere help with the Hill Troll? Did you mean Goblin Sniper?

Just stay below 30 threat, give Dunny a few attachments, and watch the troll bleed to death.
