Wow! This game smells! I think it's the foam dividers. It reminds me of the mysterious piece of black foam that was in my copy of Pandemic. At least I could throw that away, but these are actually functional. Has this been a problem with previous versions of Thunderstone? Is there a non-smelly replacement people have been using?

Speaking as someone who enjoys the smell of a freshly opened game... I'm now rather curious. I'll let you know on Tuesday when I get my sweaty palms an my long-awaited copy.

Stone Age was the worst for me, thanks to the leather cup inside which had apparently been freshly cut off of whatever animal that was.

The smells vanishes rapidly. Speaking as a guy whose wife has asthma.

This is among the stinkier games I've opened too but same experience here as Ed... dissipates quickly and my wife has asthma (and I'm allergic to nearly everything). The smell was completely gone within 24 hours.

For the record, the smelliest game of all time was Star Trek: The Adventure Game. That thing really never did stop smelling for me... you'd think that a game produced in 1985 wouldn't still stink of printing when opened in 2009 (24 years later) but it was rank like no other.

Runebound for me. It stunk so badly i had to put it out in the garden until it had learnt its lesson. Like some kind of naughty dog.

The dividers did stink. I had to throw mine out and use dividers from another Thunderstone expansion. They smelled like paint thinner or gasoline. I had to air out my box for a little while as well.

For the love of good don't leave them in once you've unwrapped the cards...there's a good chance the smell will transfer.

Great game though...

Yeah, I unboxed the game, and bam. It has a really strong finish smell to it. I've even kept the game unboxed for three days now and my friend still got a big whiff of it.

I usually love new-book new-card and new-game smell in general. Whenever I buy these things (or check out books in a store) the first thing i do is smell them. Book-smells make me relive great old memories.

But this smell... This is definitely bad. Almost unbearable, the strongest I've ever smelled in this category. I'm not even sure it is healthy. I could not decide whether it comes from the foam inserts or the rule-book or both. I left the box open so hopefully it will go away soon.

It was definitely the foam inserts, at least for me. The smell was almost completely gone after I left out the foam inserts overnight.

Yep this game smells. yuk

I do NOT recommend pressing the foam inserts into your nose and sniffing hard. My eyes are watering and I can't get rid of the smell. gulp

Remember: I did this, so you don't have to.

This box is going to be 'lid open' for the next 24 hours.

I thought everyone might have been overkilling this, but yep this is a stinker (although perhaps not in the way Stone Age was with its cup).

Definitely smells more like "chemical" volatiles (I would have said ink rather than foam - if you get my meaning), but I am sure leaving the box open for a day or so will see these going away.

For those thinking that this is that "new card" smell...it is different.

I'd be afraid to use a lighter over the open box because I might blow up my apartment.

My copy didn't have that smell at all. Am I just that lucky?

It's not that I'm oblivious - I can tell if my father lights up one of his crappy cigars from two rooms away... With the doors closed.

New card smell is awesome!
